Hey guys,What do you recommend for tires on your e36s saloon with 17 inch wheels? What sizes would you recommend 225/45, 235/40 ? ? Give some prices as well. Not for racing ...... and i like it to be quiet. Definitely must be good in wets and dry.So, all your suggestions welcome.

225/45 or 235/40.for lesser rolling resistance, the narrower the better.i have 235/45/17 - the 'most accepted' size for the e34.falken azenis st115 - the tyre that you want - quiet and good in wet/dry.soft compound.not for racing or it will be shredded to bits in no time.

I like the Pirelli Dragons cos it's nicely priced and feels like a good all-rounder with adequate performance in dry and wet.

i am not using it, but i hear alot of good review just like what moots mention. silent, good in wet & dry, but only disadvantage is wear fast because of soft compound (silica compound), that is the material that make it silent from what i understand.

i use goodyear f1.. good for dry and great for wet.. can go fast when everyone else is going slow..

Have tried Conti Sport Contact 2, Pirelli Dragon, and Yokohama.

With due respect, etc, etc, Pirelli Dragon is crap, and I would not use it again.

It's nice and cheap, and feels good for about 1-3 months.

After about 50%, it goes to pot rapidly. The noise alone will drive u up the wall. If it hits a bump at speed, it deforms and starts a percussion drumming band, rocking your car w a pulsating beat, only recovering its composure when you slow down at the toll. You'd swear your rims were bent. They are not. It's the tires. And the grip goes away after a few months use.

Conti Sport Contact2 is excellent, esp in dry, but can be dangerous in wet, as the tread goes. Also, CSC2 is pricey. But the grip in the dry is nice and very progressive, giving you plenty of warning as it gradually exceeds its limit of adhesion. As the tread wears out, it seems to grip better! In the dry, of course.

Am currently on Yokohama Advan Neova AD07. Price is slightly higher than Dragon, and much, much better by far. Nice and grippy, and performs nicely in the wet, better even than CSC2. A tad noisier as it wears on, and when sliding, not as progressive as CSC2. However, at less than RM600, its a real bargain, dollar/performance.

Thanks guys for your replies.

I was thinking of getting the CSC 2. 225/17/45. Quoted me 780 per tire. Is that fair? Highly recommended by a friend and also the tire shop. But after reading Lee36328's comment...hmm... not so sure now.

I'm really confuse with tire choices... so many to choose... and I'm not an expert! :(

What about Bridgestones?

CSC2 17" at RM780? That's cheap!

I would then check the year it was made.

The last time I checked a few months back, there was no fresh stock. Only tires made in year 2003 was available. One of the reason why I switched.

CSC2 is good, it will grip in the dry even when the tread wears down to nothing. Just don't go crazy in the wet with it tho', and change it as soon as the tread wears out.

i tried hankook rsv8 is a good tire , before this i use es100 yokohama , i can say that is either better than es100 or same worth the money rm 300 tire for 215/45/17 . it is made of super silica compound. the tire shop told that this tire (in fact all the tire made after the ventus range )are made by a bit of michelin taste . michelin has bought 30%of hankook operation in korea .
if u dont mind the brand name , for me i dont mind .

Hi Lee36328,

can you comment on the other Yokohama ranges, like the ES100, A-Drive and C-Drive.

Have been doing some research of late and finally concluded on the Yokohama C-Drives. Price was a factor at approx RM460/ per piece (225/50/16). Was previously convinced that I should get the Michelline Preceda's but then price was too high. Would love to get the Advan Neova, but can be a tad expensive (i.e, in excess RM500 per piece).

Cheers,
Ken.

I've got Yoko C-drives on my Forester, and I think they're bloody good for the money! Great grip in the dry and the wet, and they seem to be holding up well at 13,000 kms. I would reccommend them unreserverdly for a daily, non too sporty, car.

Michelin Precedas are pretty good bargains for the $$$. For 225/45/17, the price is around 470 a piece.

Agreed with Lee, Dragon is from the lower range of the Pirelli tires. Advan Neo seems pretty good, but a little pricey IMO.

My family car (Corolla) is on C-drive.

Since the car is not used very much, I can't give much feedback. The price is reasonable, and should suit normal driving. If you tend to push ur car on a regular basis, the extra money on a better, 'performance' tire is well spent.

By the way, the price difference between C-drive and Neova is around RM400+ for 4 pieces.... in the long run, not very much, right?

It all depends on how good wet and dry traction u want.
Pilot Sport2's are supposed to be the best ultra high performance tires with excellent grip in the wet.
Only down side is a thread wear rating of 220 and a price of around 900 for 245/40/17s.

over the past 2 years Ive been fortunate to try the following tires on luxury cars ranging from lexus 300 3.0v5, Alfa 168v6, new GTI 2.0 SMG, Merc 300CE 3.0, Jetta VR6 2.8and e34 525i. IMHO:

ST115, fairly good grip in wet and dry. Horrendous wear rate of < 20k Km om my Alfa and yes I rotated them and kept good tire pressure!!.. Steering feel avg, turn in so so. cheap at 300ea but with that wear rate not that cheap.

Falken 512: wears about 50% better than ST115 but grips a lot less, and steering feel evern worse. about 300 ea.

Pilot Sport 2: bloody expensive at 1K+ ea. but very very impressive grip in wet and dry, wore well. tip top steering feel. A really impressive tire as it could be driven right to the limit and is so steady.

CSC2: impressively good grip, very similar ot P. sport2. on my mom car but wear rate looked good at it lasted 35K, kms over 3.5 years.

C-Drive, Decent grip and in wet and dry, not quite as good at st115 but a more steady planted feel. good wear rate - 12Kms and about 1/4 tread gone. i.e 75% tire life left. strange but 1 year old and it still looks "new" while the falkens look 10 year old at 1 year of use!! hmmm. I paid about 400 each. so I feel good value.

Stamford Tires's brand name: Firenza, v. similar to 512, but a bit cheaper and seemed to wear better. Grip about same as 512 but not as good as C-Drive. S. seemed a good everyday tire on the Alfa 168 and Merc.

I've found you get whatn you pay for. ST115 & 512 cheap but not cheap be they wear out in 1 year with my driving. I feel C-Drive are good value and same for firenza with C-Drive being more sporty. Best is DEFINITELY the CSC2 and Pilot Sports !! I think there is truth in we gets what we pay...!!! that is why mercs and BMW sell for more than Protongs!!!

if I had unlimited budget then there not doubt the CSC2 and Pilot Sports are king. but i would buy the CDrive again but not the ST115 or 512 as I think they cant take the weight of our continential cars esp BMW5 and 7s

Some good comments here... much appreciated.

I've read a number of BMW mags and I've seen quite a few of the cars using Toyo Proxies T1-R.

Are they sold in Malaysia? I need to check... unless any of use guys know? If so, how much?
