e9 vs 335i or for that matter r34 vs m5?
above all, it all boils down to my very own opinion. feel free to pour in comments and facts as we gained a notch higher in knowledge by discussion.
For me, total power applied on Msian roads on daily usage can be divided to few categories :-
1. normal sprint off traffic lights to another (silly eh), heck we did it at least once or twice before.
2. mid range overtaking along busy federal roads, after tailgaiting some trucks with sand, stones, chicken shit, etc
3. chasing/kiasu with evo-based, t/charged satriavos, wiravos, putravos, perdanavos and alike
4. highway crusing with immediate kick down to leave others behind
5. hill climb, downhill, country roads towards nature challenge
6. drag racing, track racing, drifting in confined environment
Most cars are being measured via 0-100km/h, 0-160km/h (100mph), lateral g for skidding, 0-400m, or simpler methods...xxx hp/rpm, xxxNM/rpm. European testers do compare roll-on acceleration, mid range acceleration, etc.
Yet, we siblings tend to compare and test on our own via our non-official methods. For me, I repeat as for me, I am glad to have something that can leaves others behind as fast as possible be it turbo or none with PROPER handling and braking to cut off speed should there be an emergency. Leaving others behind to me is not being gone in a whoosh and disappear from traffic. That only works in movies and not reality.
Picture this. Years ago, I was in my proudly bought 528i CBU 1998 bought new and happily 'bullying' 1.3-1.6' Msian makes along the federal roads in Perak. Though lowered with stiffer springs, 18in roller at that time had some handling in respect with negative on the rear wheels dialled in for minimum oversteering. Steptronic was not instantenous but did make a 1sec difference in getting to manual mode. Till one day, there I was side by side against a yellow E6 with big exhaust, large i/cooler and suspecting higher boost. Lights turned green. I stomped the fun pedal and rear tyres gave a short screech and off I went. The evo was fiddling with his clutch BUT I was left dead as though my throttle cable snapped as I saw with shame and lost dignity - the yellow EVO zooming away on every gear and I noticed I was already 175km/h and the evo is like 2kms ahead. The last left off-chamber corner, I almost lost control as I was going too fast. Ease on the brakes and I was left to see the EVO tail lights disappearing into darkness. I was fast, just not fast enough. I knew, I need an EVO to satisfy my hunger for speed. Damn, no comfort, no status, no nothing - does not matter. No more mr nice guy in a continental ride....arggghhh.
That was exactly 10 years ago. Alright, t/charged cars have more grunt/torque over the entire rpm. s/charge does as well, not to the t/charges extreme in std mode. Dump the C200K supercharger, I sold if off within 3 months owning it. Lost 50K in depreacition. Sigh...
335i twin turbo is somewhat state of the art in t/charging technology. EVOs n Subarus and even Supras have t/charging with realibility for a long time. Now, both equally power to weight (should that occur), which one would you dare to 'thrash' - the bimmer or evo/subaru? Cost of damage?
Do up the 325i - supercharged it MAY bring little problems. Infact bimmers are to be taken good care. Gaskets, water pumps, radiator tops, hose, sensors, u know the usual stuff. Japs are more prone to extreme abuse, cheaper as half-cuts contribute a lot to w/shops spare parts. No proprietary DME or any MODIC diagnosis required. I supplied MODIC software (pirated) ones to independent workshops and that cost a bomb. No I don't sell anymore.
Ask urself - willing to spend RM4xx for a combined feature - style & power or rather spread to two vehicles - E7/E8/MR/9 with mods - RM1xx/RM2xx + 325i RM1xx ?
U can have one ride for biz and the other for fun, neck recking drive.
A car comes in a package - with power n handling to match. Find your way of driving to fit. Not drive to fit the ride. You will cursed how bad or how slow the ride not matching your style. At least that works for me. No point driving an all out premium expensive limousine to impress others but you are driving n cursing n mumbling what if (@)#&&, what if *&#)* I would have more fun down this country road than to feel the depreaciation over the months of ownership.
At least that works for me, after learning the hard way. Wasted RM n effort. I hope to yearn and benefit from my past experienced.
I reckoned to own a bimmer is a package. No need for all out speed. It was not meant to be that kind of package. It's a package of 'being there' with performance thrown in. Unlike MB, performance/handling is compromised with extra comfort. Of coz, M and Brabus, AC, Breyton and others are trying to pull few notches higher into the handling/performance zone.
EVOs n Subarus can NEVER win or qualify in any comfort, expensive package. It is merely speed toys and rally replicas that are legal on the road. With minimum mods, power/torque are extractable. Stroker kits are available too.
