Hi noob here, i'm driving an e46 323i , and i wonder, what kind of air filters i can use? can fix them hks or k&n's? if manual, then probably can feel the difference, but since mine is an auto, will there be any difference? or do i need 2 tune the car to get a perfect breathing setting?Help!Thankyou, best regards!:top:

Get a K&N drop-in and you are good for 30,000 before a wash. Better throttle response too!

thanx isaac. mine is an auto gearbox. can straightaway feel the diff?

Is the air filter going into gearbox ? NO.
Thus, if manual tranny can benefit it, so does auto gearbox.
The differences in feel is purely personal experience and differ from person to person.
In paper, & dyno, installing K&N should see "Restore Power" immediately.

Restore??? it should gain you a bit more ponies compared to the stock air filter as it will allow the engine to breathe easier and like bro Isaac mention ... better throttle response :top:

i agree with turbology. a good clean air filter is as good as any aftermarket. the less resistance, the more air goes in, so more burn. the noise increase however adds some hp ;)

You forget about the stickers !!

oh ya...forgot la. one K&N sticker would not only increase 3.592 hp, but also improve drag efficiency by 0.09  turbology...how many stickers u got on your butt?

There's only one way to "restore" full power and that's remove your air filter.. :p

If you know what is the purpose of an air filter, the rest is just common sense.. :D

Next, do understand what an oiled filter can do to your Air Flow Mass sensor in the long run..

Be prepared!

You mean the butt of my car?
Only one. It says : "Ramsing was here"

hahaha....yes, the car, not d actual butt. actual butt u have to find the ghee gang for any stickers :p

'Ramsing was here'....wah, this gives d same effect as a NOS 100 shot. :D but u need to feed it kari often...:D :D

I see ... so sthe stock air filter which iirc is made of paper offer the same air flow as the one offered by cotton (K&N, BMC & etc) and ITG filters (AFE intake & etc)??? is that what you guys trying to say??? Bwahahaha ... sorry guys but i totally disagree if not K&N and BMC wouldn't be here until now ... The fact is cotton and ITG type of filters do offer more air-flow than the stock filters ... and does increase a bit of power that's a fact :D

Edit: But I do agree that using aftermarket drop-in filter do allow for more dust particles to go inside the combustion chamber compared to the stock filters however if you regularly change your engine oil ... it's a moot point IMHO

if you don't over oil your k&n you won't have any problems. have over 200,000 kms on mine now and no problems with my AFM. how much power you get from only an airfilter swap on an auto won't be felt. best case will probably be a gain of 2 rwbhp. and i doubt if anybody can feel that at all. do the swap if you plan on getting a lot more work done, like cams and exhaust. if you're doing the swap to stop using throw away paper filters and save the planet, then go for it too.
my advice, stock is best, if u want more power get an "m" car.

why not get the aFe Cold Air Intake ,
it increase 30+/- BHP on my M52B28, more engine blowing roar that make people stun...
you can get it from me.. :34:

a must have for those E46, since it heavier than E36...:34:

wow, a 30 bhp gain is pretty impressive. i'm interested. do you have a before and after dyno chart and will it work on my e36 328? will i get 30 bhp too?

How about we say like this? K&N and etc is better in typical car cos their stock paper filter quality is OK only so there is more restriction over aftermarket one.

But... BMW leh...!! So their stock paper filter(or OEM) quality is very high! Thus there is little restriction(Neglegible) , and u can hardly feel difference between stock and aftermarket, so why bmwe34.net suggest retain stock(in this case, an BMW E34)

Juz my own understanding though, still a long way to learn...

Hmmm ... just bcos it's BMW doesn't mean anything ... a paper is still paper lol and being OEM filter it will have to be restrictive to capture dust and debris compared to K&N and BMC ... I've got a BMC CDA while it may not give extra HP but i definitely feel improve mid-range torque and better throttle response plus the sound is very addictive...

What's with the sarcasm??? ->

Personally i dun use any aftermarket filter b4, so dunno in the real world la, juz my hypothesis. So tats wat astroboy said, wat is da purpose for de filter:wink:

If really wanna get omp, then perhaps i will choose the stoke, bigger displacement, chip etc, MAF etc.
