2nd Gear on e34 manual 2.5 12V

Hi Guys,when my car is cold my 2nd gear is quite hard to engage. Once warm it is much much better but I have to shift slowly (pause of 1 sec) and use a bit of force to get a good smooth shift or the box give a small nudge (not a grind just "klunk"). It's also senstive to the rpms at which I shift .Shifting to 3rd and 4 and esp 5 much much smoothly and with little pressue on gearknob. Is this the norm? I did feel this problem was so pronounced in my old e28, but then 5 years may have modified my memories and expectation somewhat.I suspect its the 2nd gear sychro? If so anyone have experience in how much it is to overhaul?btw: changed the gear oil and had my linkages adjusted several months ago. - it improved 2nd gear a LOTt I'm still have the same above problem

Hmmmm, come to think of it, I have tested a few manual E34s (in various forms 520i / 525i, 12V / 24V, standard / modded) and I found trying to get into 2nd gear is harder compared to the other gears. Could be synchro problem as I found it easier to enter 2nd gear when I "double de clutch". :yes:

Darn, perhaps I should have gotten a manual myself too. :cry:

did you try it? if so does it work.

if this persist I'm goign the spend the 250 and get the 2nd sychro replaced.

Using stand GL4 BMW recom oil. I think it's a 90w

Check your linkages again!. Do you get a lot of slop ?. On neutral should be 2-3cm at most. If more the bushings at the lower connecting rods are bad. Could be the shift rod bearing too (the round plastic cup that holds the shift ball to the support). I got a little slop about 2cm. I will change the bearing when I get a short-shifter.

The other mod I did recently was interesting. Got the tip from oversteer.com. Some guy added lead weight to the horizontal rod connecting shifter to gearbox attachment. I did something better and simpler. I hose clamped a 1.5 lb stainless wrench handle to the linkage rod. 2 bmw 1inch hose clamps, 1 spare stainless wrench handle 1-2lb wieght. This smoothen out the shift a lot, especially doing quick 1-2, 2-3 shifts. Simple 15 min job.

This is like making a small hammer heavier in the hammer-head so you don't have to bang hard to get the nail in. BMW gearbox is designed with a stopper so hitting it hard will not break anything. I think the human wrist will break first!.

If its is your syncho. Then the clutch syncho ring will be replaced. There are 2 sets, front and back. Expensive....

Hi. I am thinking of changing the manual trans oil too because when running without the aircon, the gear shift kinda warm abit. My fren said it is due to the exhaust but I doubt it and dont mind changing it.

So would appreciate it if you can help me with these questions:

Where can I find the redline Manual Tans oil?

How much?

How much does E34 (but E36 M3 trans) pakai? 4 liter, 5 liter, more?

Any rating for the oil like engine oil? If yes, which is suitable for E34?

I'm using BMW SAE90 and no problem until now..except the 2nd gear hard to engage....actually I'm using short shifter and nearly all gears ar hard to engage...

Just contacted them but they cant tell me how much is needed. They are also not sure which to use but did mentioned MTL. After checking at www.redlineoil.com, I found out that MTL is indeed for BMW. And they quoted me RM50 per liter. Ok?

I'm using Redline MTF too and if I remember correctly two bottles of the MTF (they come in 1 litre bottles) will be enough. Infact you'll only use 1.5+ bottles of the MTF only. The rest you can keep for your next change. Surprisingly the manual gearbox uses very little MTF compared to the auto gearboxes. Good thing too since the Redline MTF is $50 per bottle.

Yup I believe MTF & MTL is the same thing. I changed mine at Autobags. Its just a 20 - 30 min job and uses 1.5 bottles.

FYI, if you going there please DO NOT USE the blardy short cut at the football field to turn in. Just got my skirting scratch kaw kaw yesterday because there is a f***king big pothole just before the partially collasped wooden bridge..
