a popular coversion for the 190E is putting in the 6 pot 2.6 engine in it..

True...... but you must get the 190e half cut. The 190e 2.6 has a removable front end to facilitate the installation/removal of the six cylinder engine. If you have a six pot engine alone, no way you can get it into the engine bay for the four potter. You need a donor front end.

Not sifooo lar, just happen to have owned both.

Ok, it's like this both are damn finely engineered cars by the germans. Both are probably the best examples from both marques. But it depends on what you expect from a car.

The Merc: Probably the best compact luxury saloon ever built. Offers factastic ride and built quality. Go for the late model 2.0 or 190e 2.6( same engine as the W124 260e sedan). The 2.6 is the best in terms of weight to power ratio. Handling is similar for both and is quite good for an 80's saloon. Typical Merc character of plenty of bodyroll but good grip! Easy to maintain, no specialist required, any half decent mechanic will do. No rust issues on models after 89 as they are galvanised.

However, the final drive on all variants of the 190e family is very dissapointing......3000rpm in top gear is 115km for the 2.0 and 120km for the 2.6. It's fine for urban driving but not enough for highway cruising.

Conclusion: Excellent value for money, frugal, well built, readily available parts and they are cheap! A great cruiser and projects a very favorable image for the driver.

The Bimmer: Best sports sedan from the era. Ergonomically superior but lacks the classy ambience of the merc. Trouble free motoring from the last model 318i M40 and the best choice for those seeking an introduction into the world of e30s. 325i is the choice for those with sporting intentions but please learn how to handle a rear wheel drive in advance! One of the best handling cars ever! PERIOD! Easy maintainence but need specialist attention to get the best out of the engines. Rust free after 89 (look for the plastic bumpered cars).

However, not as frugal to run as the other german and cosmetic parts can be hefty. Mechanical parts are cheap and readily available. The ride quality may not appeal to all due to it's sporting nature.

Conclusion: Best of the 80's motoring icons and still relevant today. In terms of drivability and dynamics it is examplary even by today's standards. Notty image for the owner though.....(not necessarily a bad thing....hehehehe)

THE BOTTOM LINE: comparing Mercs and Bimmers are like comparing apples and oranges, they are just not the same thing. Their design and engineering philosophies are on completey different paths. They are both very, very good cars and that's why I have both.

A very good explanation from an owner of both :top:

interesting outtake from all of ya..so mr Kevster30, which one edge over for you from these "apples" and "oranges" ? it sure is nice to have both in the garage. lovely!

that "mystical feeling" of owning two major rivals, kevster30, which one is you personal favourite???

dannybaba13 and beemer04 should come for TT and have a teh tarik or a chill one (whichever works for you). Both cars has its own merits... And if I can have it my way, I'll have both... ;) I'll take the 2.3 16V for its racing predigree..

thanks bro fabianyee

190e is more onto comfort, when comes to driving pleasure.... i prefer E30 so much.....

In terms of the design, bmw make it so simple & nice...

merz always use diff tech with bmw. its just so headache when comes to repair the 190e. the fuel divider always need to bleed after long storage. sigh...

u will always see the 190e halfcut with the fuel divider missing...

Well said indeed dude,
The E30 M3 S14 & 190E 2.3-16 are my favorite dog-legs of all time
:top:

can't help but put in my 2 cents here...M3 rare as kiwi here but you can get a fairly good cosworth from RM30K+ (there are some for sale at mudah...dunno if it's the real thing tho)....plus the M3 is LFD...so...

went to test drive '86 190e with my friend today.. for him.
its manual 4 speed!!!! the seller said 5 speed is RARE model!!! omg!
and the engine looks like carburetor model for me. but seller said its injection. i dont know about merc engine.

but the ride is very comfy... :)

merc engines do look like carb engine due to the filter shape... FYI, the merc fuel injection system of the same era are still not fully electronic injection, still partially mechanical...

waw this last thread is on 2009....yea like bro fabianyee said, those 190e engine r like that, my 190e original engine is 2.0,but using the 124 2.3 fuel divider, ada beza but..minyak mayak kuat, but alway tunning lari... then last 2 yrs i buy the 2.3 16v halfcut ..wallah until now still in superb condtion..try to find my old pic n will post it here.....guys trust me they parts oso not very cheap...

didnt snap any pic bro. just follow my friend to test drive the car.. :)

Yes Fab, i assume its carb engine because of the filter shape.. i was wrong thn..

just wondering with 4speed manual, how will be FC for highway cruising.. and how about the auto trans? 3 speed or 4 speed?

Hmmm.. im asking question about merc in BMWCM. hhehe dont Kill me. just want to help my friend.
