hi guys, has anyone ever driven any variant of the mercedes 190E? how does it compared to our beloved E30?

dude...talk to kevster30. he is the resident sifoo of topic 190E vs E30. believe it!

the closest competitor to the mighty E30 M3 is the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5L 16V Cosworth.. i know, its a long name

The sound of DTM: BMW M3 E30, Mercedes 190 EVO2 & Mercedes 190 Class1 :top:

Well I have driven a 190e, it is a comfy car, the seats are comfy, I have never driven an e30 before but if I compare with my e36 coupe, will go for the 190e!

When the M3 E30 was 2.3 up against the merc 190E 2.3 16v the BMW was much more powerfull. Than BMW introduce the M3 E30 2.5 Merc came out with 190E 2.5 16v. Sad to say the BMW got rape in the DTM race in german and also in SEA touring car championship in asia.

a popular coversion for the 190E is putting in the 6 pot 2.6 engine in it..

read an article before, main advantage of the 190 is its suspension set up, especially the rear which was revolutionary when it was launched...if not mistaken, the line from the article says somthing like : " it would take a determined & skilled E30 driver to keep up with the merc on the twisties and the gap widens if the road is wet" ....
as for the 190 2.3 / 2.5 - well wat can you say re the cosworth + merc marriage...the M3 is good, but the merc was ..well new tech coming into play...
i heard also that the merc is actually cheaper to maintain ?? cant confirm this though....
at the end though, for these older cars now, it very much tepuk dada tanya selera , or shuld should i say tepuk wallet ....

ive seen a couple of nice examples of 190E on the road these past couple of months. i have to say the looks is starting to grow on me.

Good solid car, one of the last of the "over-engineered" Mercs that were made to last forever. Easier on the wallet to maintain as many Merc parts are much cheaper than the equivalent E30 part. I know because I'm using a couple on my BMW as replacements

To give you an idea of how solid Mercs of that era were:

That said, I'd still take the E30 over it anyday, driving excitement can't compare and the 190 frankly looks quite dated inside and out compared to the still-stylish e30. IMO doesn't really make much sense talking about Cozzies since there's not many around locally, and even less for sale. Seen a nice 2.3 16v around my neighborhood before though.

Since you have a nice E30 already though, it'd be a good complement for more sedate driving, just be sure to wear uncle button shirt, uncle black rim glasses, and hair grease or it just won't look right for a young guy :D

i saw some 190E 2.3L 16V Cosworth on Seputeh days ago, in black, sweet @ss ride!~

the 190E Cosworth is kinda rare 'cuz is been hiding under the shadows of the M3, but still its a seriously seriously Over Overmuch engineered car, so much that do you know that the central lock was operated by compressed air??!!

for practicality and performance the Mercs the winner, its kinda like a whole package, whereas the M3 is more of a like a race car. If you ask me to choose between the 190E and M3, just kill me instead... its so hard to choose between two lovely modern classics, lol xD

oh and theres a red like maroon 190E for sale about one block away where I live, i'll post the hp number soon if ya want~

Please dun call me uncle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why are you being fanatic about bimmers, the discussion here is on a comparison between 2 marques and if this forum is just about supporting 1 marque and what's the use having such discussion. Grow up mate!

No my coupe is being used by my wife FYI!

I thought the 190E 2.3-16 had beaten the E30 fair and square until they came out with the M3 and then the 2.5-16 came out to square things off again.

Careful of the 2.3-16 RH drive. In the conversion from LH drive, early 2.3-16 suffered from the exhaust boiling the steering box. The exhaust was later rerouted and a heat shield put in place..

It is great car.

Not sifooo lar, just happen to have owned both.

Ok, it's like this both are damn finely engineered cars by the germans. Both are probably the best examples from both marques. But it depends on what you expect from a car.

The Merc: Probably the best compact luxury saloon ever built. Offers factastic ride and built quality. Go for the late model 2.0 or 190e 2.6( same engine as the W124 260e sedan). The 2.6 is the best in terms of weight to power ratio. Handling is similar for both and is quite good for an 80's saloon. Typical Merc character of plenty of bodyroll but good grip! Easy to maintain, no specialist required, any half decent mechanic will do. No rust issues on models after 89 as they are galvanised.

However, the final drive on all variants of the 190e family is very dissapointing......3000rpm in top gear is 115km for the 2.0 and 120km for the 2.6. It's fine for urban driving but not enough for highway cruising.

Conclusion: Excellent value for money, frugal, well built, readily available parts and they are cheap! A great cruiser and projects a very favorable image for the driver.

The Bimmer: Best sports sedan from the era. Ergonomically superior but lacks the classy ambience of the merc. Trouble free motoring from the last model 318i M40 and the best choice for those seeking an introduction into the world of e30s. 325i is the choice for those with sporting intentions but please learn how to handle a rear wheel drive in advance! One of the best handling cars ever! PERIOD! Easy maintainence but need specialist attention to get the best out of the engines. Rust free after 89 (look for the plastic bumpered cars).

However, not as frugal to run as the other german and cosmetic parts can be hefty. Mechanical parts are cheap and readily available. The ride quality may not appeal to all due to it's sporting nature.

Conclusion: Best of the 80's motoring icons and still relevant today. In terms of drivability and dynamics it is examplary even by today's standards. Notty image for the owner though.....(not necessarily a bad thing....hehehehe)

THE BOTTOM LINE: comparing Mercs and Bimmers are like comparing apples and oranges, they are just not the same thing. Their design and engineering philosophies are on completey different paths. They are both very, very good cars and that's why I have both.
