Anyone knows whats the running cost like of the X5? Much higher than E46 or very very very much higher than E46? Looking at 2005 3.0L

The cost can varies accordingly to the condition of the car, there are some very expensive replacements parts that runs in 5 figures if you are unlucky. I assume you are getting a used X5, based on 2005 the car is already 5 years on the road and may have about 100,000 miles. There are a number of things that will be due, one of which can be the gear box. It would be better if you take a mechanic with real knowledge of the car to do an inspection. Otherwise it can be very costly, even though the car comes cheap.

hi, thanks for info. Actually i'm looking at the 2005 facelift ones japan unreg with low miles. i think they should be ok right. just really need to get a good one from a reputable importer.

Hi there,

I have a 2002 uk spec 3,0 sport bought from 1st owner last year at 15000 miles, now are 31000 miles. To date i have spent on the following with rates attached:-

AC Cooling coil: RM1800
Front brake shoes: RM388
Rear Brake Shoes: RM300
Gbox Oil: RM600 with filter

FC is around 30cents/km, Running cost is just like E60. 2005 3.0 Sport. Just get the good condition car and bring it to mechanic before buy lo. Got mine 6 months ago, without any problem i would say. But the car is little bit bumpy. Mine is 19" rim.

Engine is M54 so pretty cheap to maintain. wear n tear parts also pretty normal, only thing expensive is the back air suspension but it really give you a good handling which surprise you. Oh, the transfer case might be costly but not easy to be damage :) hope this help you.

Anyone got a reputable importer to recommend for an X5? Any issues getting imported one as was told cannot be serviced locally at Auto Bavaria malaysia. Anyone got a good mechanic to intro as well so I can have a car properly checked out b4 purchasing. Am planning to get a 2008 X5 with 20K mileage. I have a choice of a local Auto Bavaria X5 2008 (not sure if still available) and a AP Japan Spec X5 08 7 seater unreg. Asking 400K which I think is too high. What would be a reasonable price for such X5?

Getting one from 2nd hand car dealer is ok as long as warranty is given, try for those which gives at least 2 years. AB gives 3 years warranty so if the one you're getting is 2008, means there's remaining 1 year left, and of coz since the car is from AB, just send it back for a full check up before purchase. But since its still under their warranty, you've got no choice but send it back to them for service during this period as not to void the warranty. And do bear in mind they charge a premium even just for an oil change. Personally I've sent my E70 to Beemerholics in Sunway for servicing once before and I do find their mechanic is highly knowledgeable especially about the N52 engine. Another place which i've sent to before is another workshop in Jln 225 just behind Mobil which I sent to replace the faulty elec park brake switch, They are quite good as well as they specialize in continental rides, espcecially bemmers with the new generation engines and gearboxes.
From what I've been following, a fair 08 E70 3.0 should go for around $380k-$$410 depending on the specs & condition of coz. Try to get one with rear cam, power boot and HUD. But FWIW theE70's rear cam is below par compared to other German marques, or even the Japanese SUVs/MPVs as during the night you can hardly see plus the lag for it to activate when Reverse gear is selected is an eternity 5 to 7 secs.
The problem with getting a Jap recon is the radio frequency which is different from ours, so leceh a bit if you listen to the radio a lot. Plus the built in GPS on the iDrive is unusable here in M'sia as it uses a different "system'. UK spec ones are compatible. And of coz not to mention the one from AB of coz everything is usable from radio to GPS.

H Pratt,

Thanks for the feedback. Greatly appreciated. I have read a lot about electronic/electrical issues with the 2007-2008 crop of X5s. How has you're been running? has it been a lot of trips to the workshop? What major fixes you've had to do on yours?

For the one I am intending to get, since it is Jap Recon I wont be covered by AB obviously. The one I am looking at the rear cam doesn't seem to be working. The dealer said it just needs to be reconfigured again in the software...hmm...my gut tells me it is already faulty.

Thanks.

Maybe I've been lucky, so far no problems except the fault elec parking brake switch as I mentioned but it was covered under warranty so didnt bother me much. No other repairs or problems since I got mine. I changed my RFTs to normal Michelin as I find the RFTs were too uncomfortable for my family seating at the back, especially on the 3rd row. A lot of difference IMO. Once you get your ride, just flash/update your idrive system to the latest firmware/software. But since you're getting a Jap spec I'm not sure if thats possible, I know UK and local specs are possible. Thats why for the E70/71, I discourage getting the Jap specs, too many limitations/restrictions.

Hi Pratt,

Again, thanks for the share. Been told by a dealer that there are actually "cracks" to load non-jap software onto the system to make GPS, radio work. have you heard of similar stories?

Is a 2008 jap spec X5 with 12K mileage for 390K a reasonable price? Been told jap spec always higher price.

Anytime bro. From what I understand, what your dealer actually means is to reflash the idrive to the local m'sia bmw software. I don't know any 3rd party workshop that does it but I do know that the local BMW service centers can do it, but they charge a bomb for that service. Do let me know if you manage to source a cheaper alternative from other workshops, which I'm interested to know too :) At the same time I would ask around for you.

Mileage on the odometer can be adjusted by workshops, so to really tell the mileage, you'll have to bring the keyfob to the BMW service centers and their computer would be able to show the actual mileage and also the service history. But if the 2008 unit you're getting is 100% accident free, then thats a reasonable price indeed. Oh yes, just bear in mind if the ride you're getting has RFTs and the thread is almost worn, replacing all 4 RFTs are almost $10k for the 19" wheels. So with other hidden costs(minor mods) everything could set you back above $400k.

Thanks. It's not on Run Flats (assume that what RTF means). It's using Dunlop Dueler 19", which I am currently using for my CRV, albeit 16". The reverse camera wasn't working. What else to check for? My wife suspect that may have been some bodywork done, which I missed. She is not sure but seems to notice the reflection off the part above the back wheel seems uneven......I need to double check. Was over at Cahaya Cheras today. Not many X5 choices ...2 UK 2007 diesel model but not on site for test drive (said custom kacau so they parked it back at the warehouse for the time being).

Also test drove a AB 2007 X5 for sale today.....the quality seemed lower than the japan spec. The leather seat quality don;t feel expensive, the steering rattkes a bit when idling.......engine sounds rougher. Really surprised to find the difference considered what we pay here in Msia for a new BMW X5.

I would strongly discourage the diesel models as our Diesel quality is still below par and the E70 2007 UK makes are not "tuned" to accept our diesel so in the long run I guess it's not healthy for the car unless you change the diesel filter frequently. Unlike the LCI E90 diesels which are more susceptible to our Euro 2M diesels. But the torque is so tempting :p But having said that, the petrol 3.0 N52 is actually sufficiently powered too in my opinion with the 265bhp and 315 torque, flooring the pedals takes about 7.8secs, not too bad for a 2 ton vehicle. But I love the sound of the 6 pots petrol.

Ya better double check on whether the car is accident free otherwise it'll cost a fortune repairing/replacing parts like the adaptive drive, brake systems or the DTC. Do keep us updated on your UDM shopping :)

Ya you're right about jap specs, they're actually better in terms of refinement and quality I noticed. The comfort package seats I have are softer compared to the jap specs, maybe becoz they're perforated nappa leather? Or maybe I'm just used to my previous ride(jap specs). But I do find the ventilated seats are very useful especially after parking under the sun for a long time. Wife loves it :) From what I read from other X forums, the most common problems are the creaking sounds during driving. So when you do a test drive, switch off the radio and aircon and try to listen for creaks. Mine was coming from the driver seat belt buckle brushing against the side leather seat. Found out the original rubber stick on for the buckle was missing(after looking at the passenger side), so manage to fix the problem after sticking a 3M rubber like tape on it. I read most X owners complaint the sound came from the door rubber seals, 'lubricating' them solves it.
