Yeah we hate our square plates too, the euro size plates look better on euro cars especially on the newer Audis. At least some states here has a one plate rule unfortunately the state I live in doesn't. I definitely prefer no front plate.

I just learnt recently Australia uses the euro plates format.

I suspect that in future, the euro-style plate may become the de-facto standard worldwide.

When you think about it, the fit and format is more universal than most, but more importantly the relevant authorities will favour this because...

...yes you guessed it, automated camera systems i.e. plate recognition.

This is already a strong ongoing effort - authorities have been gearing up for years now with the euro format to use for:
- vehicle tracking (national location, speeding, stolen, insurance, road tax etc)
- surveillance (criminals, intelligence, etc)

We can see the positive aspects of this, but its also too easily abused as a big money making scheme, on the pretext of safety and security.
