Firstly, there must be a very clear definition between wax and polish. Wax is generally a protective coat that is non-abrasive and therefore will do no harm to your car's paint. It is true that some of the waxes on the market are oil based and do attract dust but is easily removed when the car is shampoed. Water based waxes evaporate under 30mins under hot sun! BTW, Wax is always applied by hand and never by machine! The best wax to use is generally any product that has high Carnuba content and avoid any product containing silicone as it actually dulls paint in the long run due to premature drying. Polish is abrasive and works by removing a thin microscopic layer of the paint/clearcoat to clean the surface and remove light surface defects. It can be deduced that prolonged repetitive use of polish will thin your paint BUT damage will only occur if it is used/applied wrongly. Proper polishing can be achieved by both hand and machine methods but if either is not done correctly, surface/paint damage WILL occur! This is best left to professionals. I think that your friend has been highly misinformed on the proper steps and terminology related to automitive detailing. Hope this helps.
