Shazani, when you say vent plug do you mean the radiator cap or the bleed screw? I'm assuming radiator same with E34. If it is the bleed screw then the reason the water rises is that the water from the radiator is flowing back to the side tank. Which means that water has been lost somewhere in the system and that's why its been taken from the side tank. Try this, fill the side tank until it reaches the mark. Close the radiator cap. Open the bleed screw and fill water through the bleed screw until it is full. Close the bleed screw. Drive around a bit, let the engine cool off and open the bleed screw and top up if required. If you really paranoid then squeeze the lower radiator hose while pouring water constantly in the bleed screw. Repeat with the upper radiator hose. This is to get rid of any air bubbles remaining in the system. If you do this then all you need to do is to check and fill up the side tank. If you still losing water then definitely there's a leak somewhere. Have you removed and blocked off the hoses leading to the heater? Water pump may be leaking slightly. Hope this helps. If E36 different, my apologies, just informing what works with my 34. :top:
