A cross-flow 16-valve cylinder head was added to the cast-iron cylinder block. Initial testing revealed an output of between 270 and 275 bhp at 8,750 rpm. The BMW engine had higher torque than the Ford BDA and the MARCH cars would use this to their advantage. BMW sent an engine to MARCH in Bicester to be used for test fitting in the construction of the 732 car. To test the trustworthines of MARCH the BMW technicians sent an engine without any internal pieces.
