So,I've always been curious about the hole in my E46 Pre-Facelift gearbox. It's a rectangular hole where if you look into it you can see some gears. Does anyone know if there's a rubber boot or cover for it? ThanksSalut

yes, you can order it and fix it... this over time hardens and falls off or the mechanic forgot to put back/broke it while fix your gearbox...

Ahhh...light at the end of the hole...err...tunnel. Mr P, what's the part number and what's it called - gearbox hole boot or gearbox hole plugger or...?

And to make the hole issue clearer, here's a picture of it. See that rectangular hole at the bottom of the gearbox?

Solo, is your hole below or side ? if below, leave it alone, no problems... if side, then dirts get in... part number can't be seen in the etk, so you need to speak to the parts guys over the counter, they will know.. some times i wonder if BMW really did install one.. some new cars i have seen is without it...

Good question. I'm also curious to know. Is not plugging it up really ok? If you run through flooded roads, won't water get into it? Even though the water may drain out from the hole also but there will be lots of dirt left inside, right?

Anyone care to contribute their knowledge?
