Starting problem

Dear all,Today I encounter a probleh which my e46 2002 n42 wont start quite a few times. Sometimes it easily start and sometime have to try 3-4 times. My battery just changed a year before. Light all bright. What is the culprit all sifus. Is the starter or anything else. How much does the starter cost?. Really need advice. I'm going outstation more frequent and afraid i would stranded in future travel.Thanks

I have same issue but dunno whether same with u or not.Car can crank (not battery issue) but macam tersekat nak start. I already change fuel filter, replace camshaft sensor and repair valve cover gasket(due to leaking at spark plug) but still hard to start. Sometimes need to press the pedal when to start. Is it same with u?

My advise, ask your mechanic to run a diagnostic test. Pay special attention to the crank sensor. This could be the culprit.

Hi eri,

As what my mechanic said, it's the starter. It's the common prob for e46. I tried so many times then only can start. No need to press pedal. Sometimes I heard a the grrrrrrr sound at the center of dashboard.

Bro Ibrahim Hanif, crank means the sound of the starter motor turning to start the engine. In this case, Bro eri means the starter motor is running but no ignition.

Bro Ibrahim Hanif,

I would second Bro Vincent take on crank sensor as it is a sensor and maybe a sign of failing sensor.

I would also like to view it from the drive away protection system. As there would be a lot of checks be done before the starter can even execute. Read here : http://www.computersolutions.cn/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/BMW_EWS.pdf

The mechanic would check if there is even power to the starter before doing anything else.

So yours would be better described as warm start problem? No problem starting when cold? It could be still the sensors (cam/crank), plug in your diagnostic machine Bro.

This morning i haven't try to start the car bro. How to know either the starter or crankshaft sensor is the faulty.

May be you can try to ask your mechanic to check your starter carbon brush.

1. EWS and DME not sync properly - either key is faulty or EWS is faulty
2. battery very weak - check terminal for loose connection at battery.

If got crank but cannot start, it could be due to:-
1. battery weak
2. fuel pump faulty or about to fail
3. crankshaft about to fail

your problem is most likely due to the leaking vacuum hoses.

or fuel filter is chocked.

Fuel filter already change to new last week and already check with mech,no leaking at vacuum hoses. Run GT-1, no faulty come out.why ar?Sorry ibrahim Hanif, borrow your tread.

What is EWS & DME?, I read some of the info on the net which is about the immobilizer. Does it caused by my key program?. My key works just fine, lock and unlock got no problem.
