Hi brothers & beloved sisters,My name is Trincy Lim and I'm a returning Malaysian after being in Taiwan as a pharmacist for many years. I'm 27 years old. While I'm deciding which car to buy between BMW, Audi, merz, volvo and VW, I found this club through google. I'm currently driving a white Camry 2.4 which my parents bought only last year. I decide to get a car and finalise the list to between BMW 5 series E class and Audi. Apparently there is some tax rebate for returning Malaysian that I heard from my ex uni mate which made the car slightly cheaper. However, it does give me a headache as I'm not very familiar with cars. However, I was attracted by the look of BMW 5 series but honestly, given a choice, would you get 523i/520d or E200/E250 or A6? Assuming the price of this 5 cars are the same. which one would you choose? I know E250 and 523i is more towards 400k but after rebate, the price is slightly chraper than 520d. So would you choose 520d or e250? I kinda like A6 as well but they don't have rebate

520d...definitely. Fuel savings with unrivalled performance, both in a single package.

I agree with docrayboy.. the new F10 520d is a definite winner.Don't take our word for it..go test it at any of the BMW dealers.

All listed cars drives differently, heavy vs light steering, stiff vs soft suspension, harsh vs comfy ride, connected vs disconnected drive feel, good in corners vs good in straights, high maintenance vs low, lousy vs good used car value, good vs lousy warranty package, follow your heart vs your brain.. There's no best of both world or free lunch or still having an apple after eaten it.

27 years old pharmacist that know little about cars, hmmnn.... Comfy, practicality and reliability should be your preference.. BMW doesn't sound like your cup of tea. E250 should be your perfect match.

Honestly I know nuts about cars. So I will only judge by exterior look and price. So, engine wise, I would have to depends on you all. honestly, given the fact that if brand new E250 is slightly cheaper than the brand new 520D, would your choice still the same? Thanks everyone.

Agree with Astroboy, go for Merc. 520d is more for those like to ramp hard and enjoy the power (and save fuel). i don think a lady would like the rattling sound of diesel engine.

F10 is much nicer than the Merc, ( Am biased and surely most dudes here will be- this is a BMW Forum nevertheless)
If 27, and doesnt know much about cars. Why not consider the 320D? superb looks and drive. Now with the super deal, is best time to get it.
And I am not sure about your financial commitments, 320d will make a perfect starting point and will be a lot of people's dream.

If over time, you dont fancy it anymore, can upgrade to F10 also can...

BMW's main selling point is the balance chassis weight engineering to attain the status of Ultimate DRIVING Machine. If it's look and power u looking for, look elsewhere.. Unless u want the //M. Otherwise, u end up in an over-priced Bavarian machinery that even you friends and relatives will tell u that u not too smart.

I really like been here as all of you are extremely helpful.
My intention is to have a car that can last for, another 10 yrs, perhaps as I don't intend to change car quite often. I initially thought of a 3 series or C class but decide to stretch further to either E or 5. I just want a car that looks classy n reliable and give me less trouble. Apparently either 5 or E are ok just that do not know how to choose. Am I too troublesome? I'm sorry but I guess I just wanna make a right choice. Thanks sister n brothers!

Trincy, u love driving fast? U enjoy driving? Say, take the longer way home just because u like driving, take the trunk road just because more corners there? If all the above answers are "Yes!" then we can click.. Because that's what WE are.. And BMW is the perfect machinery for u.. :4:

young lady like yourself should pick up a coupe or cabriolet la..! all the cars you've listed are quite large and more suited for the senior executive type crowd.

for the same price range, you should consider these options instead - the BMW 335 coupe, BMW Z4 coupe, Audi A5.
If you really want a Merc, the E250 coupe is also quite nice. Forget about volvo (except the XC60).

All the best looking for your dream car. If you want to go test driving to decide, lots of brothers here will happily volunteer to go together with you haha.

Although very much we can click, on the forum, but for me, I don't drive too fast and safety always is my first priority. :p I'm not a skillful driver yet to drive too fast to enjoy the kind of excitement.

I love the coupes, perhaps that would be my 2nd car but at this moment, I m looking for a reliable sedan.

Oh by the way, does 520d or 523i comes with parking assistant like the parking guidance in E class? I figure my parallel parking is not that up to mark and it would be great if the car can guide me on this

Hi, what's the current deal? I love deal, as a lady. Any deal for 5 series?

hi. have you test drive any of those car? if you haven't, why don't you give it a try first. see what you like the most. all the cars you mentioned above are fine cars, so you can't go wrong with any. good luck :top:

I have not tested yet. So, what are the thing to look for if I go test driving? Honestly, I have not driven a Germany car before. Sorry to say that but I just want to get a Germany car due to it's reliability

Hi TrincyLim,

I'll chip in with my 2 cents worth, in addition to the already priceless advice so liberally shared by the many experts on the forum. Mercedes Benz has finally gotten the latest E-class right - the company's sorted out a lot of the bugbears that plagued the older "四只眼" cars. Most of the reviews lauded the new E-class as a victorious return to its original roots: a solid, boxy, square, reliable tank of a car. The quintessential uncle car. Ironically, it is precisely this reason that Mercedes Benz LOST the title of the top luxury marque sold in Singapore - to BMW, no less. I mean, if an uncle like me (and yes, I'm an uncle) finds the E-class too much of an uncle car, I really have to wonder what a 27 year old returning graduate would think of the E-class, no matter how solidly built or otherwise.

The new Five series is inherently more pleasing to the eye. No odd, sharp, flamed-surface shapes to jolt one's senses. Mechanically, reliability-wise: you can be assured both cars will be well built. And both cars will be relatively more costly to maintain (when compared, say to a Japanese or Korean model). The 520d, as someone said, is a frugal sipper at the pump, yet delivers a drive that is comparable to the best petrol engines out there. That's how much the technology gap has been narrowed.

If you're concerned about safety, well, only BMW 5 series (and surprising, Hyundai!) received the max number of stars in the US CRASH TESTS 2011 - so you'll be well coddled behind the wheel of a Beemer.

And, yes, you can specify for Park Assist in the new Five Series (self parallel parking) - and apparently, it works like a charm :)

Good luck with your decision!

Uncle wobbles, thanks for your honest opinion. You make a difference in the decision I'm about to make. I really appreciate your time and guidance to a newbie like me.
Can I just check with you is the parking assistant come as a standard package or do we have to top up for it? I aware that parking guidance come as a standard function in E series. Thanks
