hi all,i just bought this 2nd hand 325i e90, which come with this so-called 'wonderful' innovation....Run Flat Tyre.My problem is, the previous owner has practically tried to run the 2 front tires flat. (he got both tires pancit)Then, he changes both to Normal tires. (due to economic reason)questions : 1. is there any place cheaper to buy the run-flat tires other than BMW? how much? 2. is there any way to retain the tires and buy normal spare tyre? 3. where do i cramp in the spare tyre? (i dont see any space for it in the boot)looking forward for replies.thanksregards,newbie:106:

#1 - Any good tyre shop which sells RFT tyres. Not sure of the price though, but I understand it's more expensive than the normal tyres

#2 & #3 - I supposed you are referring to the normal tyres. I don't see why not, but yes, where are you going to store the spare tyre? Already the boot is rather small....

Do read thru this forum and you will find some forummers have actually bought a emergency spare kit which inflates the non-RFT tyre and allow you to go on for a short distance to plug the puncture.

Cheers!

From what I heard (but not verified)... 18" RFT cost about RM2k... depending on brands! you can get it from those big tyre shops...
If you have run flat tyres... no point having a normal spare tyres... make up your mind :D

emergency spare kit is the answer, thanks.

will read thru the forum to find out more about it

Hi, I changed from run flats to normal tires due to the high prices of RFT for 18's. What I did was to buy 2 cans of those "tyre patcher" and a unit of electric pump for emergency cases. Else fail, you can always rely on AAM..

To carry spare tyre will consume space and weight and also we need to buy the tyre wrench and the jack. So its not worth it.

RFT price range from 1.5k up and u can buy 4 pcs of normal tubeless tyres with those price. Most tyre shop sell RFT.. no worries there. If still can't get, PM me.

There's lots of write up on this RFT to normal tyre conversion and what to do when puncture, few options and cost.. all have been discussed in this forum.

In fact, road side changing of tyres would soon be a thing of the past, not because of RFT, but tyre deflation warning indicator+tubeless tyres. Forget about carrying spares. I only have one wife, no spare.. :p

Ask yourself, with the introduction of tubeless tyres more than 10 years ago, whereby if a nail punctured your tubeless tyres, how long does it take to fully deflate and during this time, did you notice the deflation through daily visual inspection and patch the tyres before fully deflated? When was the last time you did an emergency tyre change at the road side? Why?

Now with our tyre deflation warning on the dash, daily visual inspection no longer needed and the moment the warning comes up, u still have weeks to get the tyre patched. Not enough?

I always ask myself, why spare tyres?

Bro, Pm me if you want RFT. I hv a set of 18" RFT >50% thread taken out from 530.

Question - is there any sensor hooked to monitor the tyre pressure in which the iDrive will inform in case of deflation???
This is because I'm not sure if all tyre shops know how to deal with BMW's tyre deflation problem.

Answer - no. E90s sold here don't have the TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitoring System - installed. We only have the run flat indicator that relies on the ABS/DSC sensors to monitor rotation speeds of individual wheels. Not 100% reliable in my experience.

my rx8 doesn't come with spare tyre either...but fitted with air compressor and liquid patch in a small kit. shud have taken that kit out when i sold my car...sigh

What about E60 Japanese specs??? Sorry... I'm driving one too :D
FYI... I'd bought a spare tyre with tools even though I'm running on RFT... coz I'm planning to change to normal tyre after all go botak. Any sifu can shed the light here?

I just changed all my 4 tires from Run Flat to Michellin PS2. For 18", the same Bridgestone RE050 fitted on the stock 325Sports is about RM1600-1800 per piece. As a comparison, PS2 averages about RM1000 per piece due to difference in size for front and back. I was going to replace mine with RFT but at that time there were no stock.

RFT's advantage is that you can still drive at "normal" speed even with the puncture. One of mine hit a pothole and the sidewall bulged up and I was going at 120+ kmh after the pothole hit (at the time didn't realize the bulging problem).

However, compared with PS2, the Bridgestone RE050 performs worse in wet and also in overall grip/handling. In conclusion, non RFT is cheaper and performs slightly better (for tires of the same class). Of course, piece of mind and safety is better with RFT.

Ever since I changed to non RFT, I bought the tire repair kit from Ingress (abt RM670?) for my peace of mind.

Deja vu..

There u go... all these has been discussed many time..

thule, all E6x, E9x, E8x and Mini is using RFT... regardless of Japs or non Japs.

Only the flagship M cars don't have RFTs. They have normal tyres + the repair kit.

Oooh.... so its paying more for less?! I wonder why? or are they admitting RFT is not suitable for performance use?! %#@$*&:stupid: RFT = inferior??

I reckon it is more because of the tyre speed rating and the RFT being thicker side wall might be heavier that other ultra performance tyres...

RFT is good for daily driver ..and the M is built with performance as priority..people don;t drive M to groceries shop as often as they drive a 318 right.

Thanks,
i guess the repair kit and electric pump is the best. (just to be on the safe side) compared to the effing-expensive RFTs.

I agree that RFT's are way too expensive, but apart from the tolled highways, our roads have become decrepit and embarrassingly third world. Do you notice that while driving, you can't look anywhere but the road 10m ahead to watch out for the potholes and uneven surfaces?

IMO there's nothing better than the peace of mind of RFTs. Normal radials are too prone to pothole damage. One of my 163s has already been dented by a pothole on a country road. Having a blowout at high speed is not a trifling matter.
