If i'm not mistaken, it's something like a variable redline. The number of bars will drop when the engine is hot suggesting a higher rpm limit than when the engine is cold. Useful especially as there is no water or oil temperature gauge. BUT, do note that the TRUE REDLINE is at 6500rpm.

If I remember correctly, I could even get 1.5 bars and this was especially after servicing the car e.g. changing the fluids etc. It would then go back up to 2 or 2.5 bars after much usage and when it was nearing another service. Any E60 sifu would like to confirm?? This feature has also been taken off the LCI models. Not sure why.
