Hi guys.

I have an old E46 year 2001(bought 2nd hand in 2005), experienced some problems with my radiator. A few weeks ago had the hose replaced and recently the o ring both done at Berlin Motor Works. The mechanic did say if leaking occurs again then I would have to go for overhaul i.e. change the gasket.

As I am quite naive in pricing and also on the car itself, could any of the members please advise the cost to have the gasket replaced and if there is any other places that can provide such service or should I just stick with Berlin Motor Works. He said the cost would be RM1900+ and would take 1 week to get the job done.

Appreciate your feedback/advise on this.

If you want to know the price for top gasket, just give a call to Bavarian Auto (search details via Mr Goggle). Alternatively, you can go to PKL Motorsports @ Jalan Kuchai Lama and ask them to give you an assessment of your engine condition.

howdy bro ottis,
i am trying to understand your issue.you have issues with the radiator and the mechanic suggested a top overhaul to change your head gasket?where are you leaking coolant from?
is the issue with the radiator or with an overheat problem that lead the mechanic to suggest a head gasket replacement?

The first indication given was when the radiator indicate light was on for a few minutes then it went off. Upon checking the radiator tank before bleeding was done, the thermostat indicator indicated the water level was low. After bleeding was done the thermostat raised itself. Then the mechanic filled it water in full. First problem resolved when the hose was replaced. Pressure test was done.

Similar problem (2nd time) occurred ie. radiator light went on and off, upon checking the O ring was replaced. Pressure test was done and showed no leaking was found. At this point the mechanic advised that if the samething happen then it had to be the gasket and he reckons that should solve the leaking problem.

radiator indicate light was on for a few minutes then it went off -> temp gauge overheat red light?

the thermostat indicator indicated the water level was low -> reservoir coolant level?

thermostat raised itself -> dis one I don't have a clue....

Is there any oil in the radiator?

Is there any water in the engine oil?

A blown gasket would shown either one of the aboves symthom.

Water leak can be from other as well:-
1. Hose - change
2. radiator - change
3. O-ring for the temperature sensor
4. O-ring for the heat exchanger
5. Heat exchanger for the air-con unit
6. bottom hose below the manifold
7. thermostat
8. Water pump.

check each item and eliminate the source of the leak.

I think he meant the coolant light. This light usually come on and off when the coolant is low or when there is an airlock in the system due to improper beeding.

Thanks Jarance and Moots. Will get the mechanic to check again based on the list given by Jarance. Much appreciated guys! By the way, any preference workshop I should refer to or should I remain with Berlin Motor Works @ Segambut?

Herbet did mention u could consult PKL jalan kuchai lama
