Just REPLACE thermostats and flush coolant. Then new 50:50 coolant-to-distilled. That should fix it once and for all!. The temp level should be 1/2 (or 12 oclock position) ALL the time. On some very HOT days and stuck in jams, needle may veer to 12:30 or almost 1 oclock position. But NEVER to 3/4 mark. Problem is, when it reaches the 3/4 mark, it will hit RED market within minutes. If it over heats, you cannot do a thing. DO NOT open radiator cap like in Jap cars. You will get burnt from pressured coolant. Wait 1 hour or more for engine to cool down. Do not pour cold/cool water on the radiator or engine. One way to bring the needle back from 3/4 to 1/2 or 1 o"clock position is to off the A/C. wind down windows and SWITCH one HEATER Full!. I know it would be HOT in the cabin. But this is way better than getting Overheating and not moving at all. Just light a cigarette so it is not that obvious that the cars is almost overheating. PS: I did that for almost an hour one night about 3 years ago coming back from long trip. I got the temp to almost 1/2 and sunroof fully open so outside air can circulate. My heater vents became so hot that I almost burnt my finger touching them!. Car survived and I got home ok. The vents did NOT melt or distort after that event. Heater was on FULL. I just pointed the vents upwards, so hot air will rise up to the sunroof.
