Dear all,I just receive my new remote key from AB Brunei. Old remote key is square, but new remote key that I receive is diamond shape. No the problem come.... New remote key cannot be program... don know why... But I still can use the key to start my car...I go back to my workshop, and there is nothing much he can help. Coz everything is base on my car's green card.:106:Is there any posibility there is no battery in the remote?? Hope all the sifu can help...... many many thanks....

Have you try to resyn the key.

First you have to do is to charge the diamond shape key. As your key is the older type (squarish) as compare to the newer type (diamond shape), there might be a compatible issue.

But looking at the procedure of resyn the key, both of them have the same procedure. So it works.

I just found out that the E46 does have a transponder to immobilize the car same like the E36 model.

Thanks alot Jarance....

I will try again when I back to Sarawak... Actually I did try using this method before... but I am not so sure I press button 1 or button 2. Never mind..will try again. FYI...last time I try open my remote key ( old key ), I found there is transporder inside the remote key... a very small black box..

What i am thinking is maybe new diamond key is using recharge battery, and since I am using the old type...so I assume there is no charging..that's why cannot be program... please correct me if I am wrong.

Jarance..... I change from A key to D key...

The key A that I have only got 2 button, lock and unlock. Key D is same with the picture you show. Both key can be use to start the car...

The difference between A and D is as follow:-

1. Key "A" need to replace battery from time to time whereas Key "D" have rechargeable battery which is recharged when you inserted the key into the ignition.
2. Key "D" also store all your preference like seat memory and if not mistaken even mileage.
3. Key "D" have open boot function whereas Key "A" do NOT have.

I think you do have the wrong key being supplied to you. Please check back with your supplier.

Your problem is that your present alarm system cannot charge or communicate the new key because of different system setup.

You could try to find a friend who have an E46 who use diamond shape key and use it to charge your key but I doubt it will work coz you still need to communicate with the EWS.

Sorry cannot help you much..

Jarance...thanks fro your help...

I did check with my supplier, but he claim that BMW Germany make the key base on my green card or Vin no.....some how when I bought my car ( recond from Japan ), that's the only key ( A type ) given to me.... What happen if my car don have any alarm system?? does it make any different??

sorry cannot understand your statement : "What happen if my car don have any alarm system?? does it make any different?"

I think most Jap recon car do not have alarm system install.
Can you confirm whether you have a aftermarket alarm install in your car.
or whether you can open or close your door with your original key.

Jarence... confirm. I can open and close my door with my original key. Even with my new key, I can do that also. Last time I try to lock my doors by using remote key, and use the key to open the door... and the answer is yes... can open..

After open the doors using the original key, I still can start the engine...

"Your problem is that your present alarm system cannot charge or communicate the new key because of different system setup." that's why I ask if I don have alarm system, will it make any different... Sorry for confusing....

OK going back to the original question..

You say you cannot program. What is it that you want to program.

Why do you need to "program" the new key when you new key can
1. Open/close the door by remote control.
2. Can start the car.

It your present problem faced by you is that, you cannot open/close your door by remote.

Sorry, we seem to talking about 2 different things.

Jarance.....sorry to make you confuse....Is my fault doesn't make the statement correctly.....sorry..

What I am trying to program is to remote lock and unlock the door. For the moment, I can only use the new key to lock or unlock the door manually...

pardon me coz trying to squeeze in here. stupid question, how do we know whether the car has alarm system or not.. Haha
If we lock the car by remote, and open the door by using the key, the alarm sounds, does that means the car has alarm system? :D

eh.....don know leh....but I think the answer is yes.

Last time somebody told me if you lock the door, the red knod at the rear view mirror will flash....don know also how true is this....

Maybe other sifu can answer your question....

1. have you ever open/close your door remotely when you first got your new key?

The problem you are facing is that the diamond shape need to be recharged. This is done by inserting the key in the ignition.

Your old squarish key used a lithium battery which need to be replaced after sometime using it.

Your present E46 do not have the "recharging device" for your diamond shape key. Hence, you cannot resyn the key because the rechargeable battery in the key is not charge.

As mentioned earlier, you can try to recharge the key with another E46 that use diamond shape key. After you recharge the key's battery, you can try to resyn it. However, I am not sure whether the key be recharge by just inserting it in the ignition slot or you have to turn the ignition ON to charge it. If it need to have to turn the ignition on, then you cannot charge it as your key does not fit the other E46.

Even if you recharged your key and resyn the key to operate the remote control, you will eventually face the problem of battery draining out in the key as the key is not charged.

I still have not figured out how does the battery get charge for the diamond shaped key.

My alarm system did not make any sound when alarm is armed. However, The signal lamp (turn left and right) will flash one time when I press the "LOCK" button on the remote key.

Jarance.... I think you're right.... maybe I need to change the battery. For the charging, I think there is a coil inside at electronic board....that is what I think lah....
