The latest retail price of the VW Golf GTi Mark V is RM200,083 (I presume it's the DSG model). At that price, would anyone actually choose to buy the BMW 120i (A) considering the Golf has more power, better gearbox, lower price and (most would say) better looks????What do you guys think???

Hmmm... very tempting. But its very sad that the Gti only comes in a freaking automatic. Any manuals available?

I'm sick and tired of driving a slush box all the time. It nice one in a while (i.e. having something to eat while driving).

btw, this not only kills the 1 series, its more of a direct competitor to the Mini Cooper S. which hovers around the RM200K bill.

but but but.... the current GTis come wid a DGS manual 6 speed gearbox ma.... no meh??

I thought VW Malaysia would retail it for less than 200K, oh well maybe with all the accessories added in. Still a pretty enticing buy, more than 20k cheaper than what WALD was selling previously.

Would it kill the already dead 1 series?? Its a no brainer, and I bet the Golf will give the Mini Cooper a serious run for the $$$.

If I were in the market for a car in that segment, my vote will go to the Golf GTi. Superior transmission (6 speed Direct Sequential Gearbox - DSG), bigger and more powerful engine (just rechip will enable the car to push out 240bhp) and arguably better looking and more practical compared to both the 1 series and Mini.

My 2 cents.:)

how much is the Golf 1.6 FSI here?? saw a few on the road...
quite perky for a 1.6 engine and fuel consumption is good.

If I had the moolahs, I would go with the Golf.... no brainer here.

Oi, stick to topic lah!!!!

hehehe

The 1.6 is retailing at RM166,816

Also, an interesting model would be the CrossPolo (aka Polo Dune). It's so pretty. Definitely better looking IMHO than the RAV4, CRV and other softroaders on the market now.

Mini is not in the same category. Although the golf is nice but there is a passion in the MCS. Plus driving the MCS is much better than the golf. Steering response of the golf is nowhere close to the mini. This has been proven in Sepang by the same driver. But if town driving is what you want, then Golf is better lor.

Bro, the DSG is pretty responsive. But if you are really interested you can order the 6-speed manual GTi, since they are all fully imported anyway. ;-)

Shall we arrange for a test drive session at Soul'd Out?

AJ is rite, Golf is in the hot hatch category and aimed squarely at the 1 series. Golf is more of an all rounder whereas Mini is aimed at the sportier market. The Golf is also humongous compared to the Mini and is double the weight of the original Golf Mark1 !!!!

Say we round it off to the 200k mark.

Besides those the models, where is quite a large choice available. And if you include the used sector into the equation, the choice is outstanding.

If you have 200k for a car, why bother with the Golf GTi, Mini Cooper S, 1 series???? Unless its going to be for the mistress/wife, daughter, gay son.

Go and get something real. Say, a Nissan 350Z, Mazda RX-8 MazdaSpeed, STi, Evo. We are in this forum because we drive BMWs, no? So unless you own a M3, M5, M6 etc there will always be the want and need for something with some balls.

Let's put this into prespective, Nismo's 350Z RS Concept is said to be making more than 350hp without forced induction. Try that on the Golf.

wow! i din know you can buy Nissan 350Z, Mazda RX-8 MazdaSpeed, STi, Evo for 200k???

Tsk, tsk... such sacrilegious talk. The Archbishop Bangle, of the Order of Spinning Propeller, shall not be pleased.

The holy citadel, Four Cylinders in Munich, shall come out with an edict decreeing that "thou shall not bow down or worship the false idol of Volkswagen."

To do so would invite hail & brimstone upon thee chariots.

Six speed manual will be my choice, I stick to well proven technology with single clutch rather than dual clutch DSG. Too much technology tend to fail easily ....

Golf GTI vs 1 Series...Golf GTI is an obvious choice. 1 Series is a mistake, you'll regret buying it.
