Hi,My 328i ('97) is having rough idling problem. My mechanic (BlueGreen) changed 1 ingnition coil (second hand, RM100) but there was no improvement and the problem still persited. When I complained he said its the MAF sensor problem also. When he disconnected the MAF the idling improved. Cost to change it is RM1000 for new and around RM500 second hand. I didnt change the MAF as I wasn't sure if he is right since he changed the ignition coil, apparently for no reason.Went to a different workshop for 2nd opinion (Autobahn @Sunway) the foreman says its the oil separator. Yesterday I took out the MAF and cleaned it with CRC MAF Sensor cleaner. The idling improved but still not perfect. If I rev up the engine for sometime it seems to be ok. But with out reving the engine goes close to stalling. The problem dosnt appear at RPM>1K and after driving for sometime seems to be ok.Now I am confused, since two workshops say two different thing. What could be the problem?1. MAF sensor? May be I didnt clean properly and try again? Or reset the computer?2. Oil separator? Will aprreciate your suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hi bro,

My take would be the MAF since you mentioned that the engine ran better if its unplugged. Did BlueGreen swap out with another unit that is known in a good condition? If it ran better, most probably your MAF is on its way out. Do take note that with a 'new' MAF installed, the car would need sometime to adjust accordingly.

Did you notice any symptoms prior to this issue? High fuel consumption, poor performance, etc.

cheers,

Hi Valvetronix,

BlueGreen swapped 1 ignition coil but that didnt make any difference.

I did notice some rough idling before this.

I will try to clean the MAF again and see if it helps. Otherwise need to change MAF I guess :(

Thanks

Just get some good electronic cleaner and try clean the MAF. But normally if you disconnect the MAF you will not get rough idling. Just increase of fuel consumption as it is richer now.
try checking other stuff eg. Knock sensor and crank sensor.

Agree with above statement... "Do take note that with a 'new' MAF installed, the car would need sometime to adjust accordingly."

I hv experience this

Bad MAF is one of the reason for bad fuel consumption... and last time my car stall during driving due to kaput MAF.

the failing oil separator cant be detected by the diagnostic tool..if there is no error in the diagnosis, do have it checked, u need to take it out to inspect the item.Any pressure leak will affect the idle..i faced that issue with my e39..just my 0.0003cent

Thanks all. I will try to clean the MAF again.

Any place you recommend where I can get 2nd hand MAF and oil separator? What could be the estimated cost?

For M52 its circa 350-450 ( i have a spare)...new oil separator is about 400 plus (not sure ori or oem) if not mistaken, from Bavarian auto,Munich or Bomin auto..correct me if i am wrong..

Was there any check engine sign?try cleaning the air filter as well while cleaning the MAF.check for sign of crack rubber boot after the MAF.

bro slyder,if i disconnect the MAF and the engine dies... what is the prob?tqs

have you refered this matter to Mr Volvo ..maybe he is well verse on this matter too ...

Got my car checked today from WQW (Mr. Wong) for a 3rd opinion.

He confirmed its due to a leak in CCV(oil separator). Couldn't get it changed today as I went there around 4pm and he doesn't have enough manpower to work on my car. Asked me go on Saturday. Mr. Wong seemed to be a very nice person and wasn't pushing to change other parts. He even asked whether I want new or 2nd hand.

Luckily didn't listen to the BlueGreen foreman and change the MAF. Would have paid RM450 (that's what he asked for a 2nd hand MAF) for nothing like the ignition (RM100) :(

Will let you guys know what happens after the CCV change on Saturday.

Thanks for your help.

U can get ori ventilation valve around 200(e39). So try not to get slaughtered.
