astroboy I realised that your E90 does not come with Comfort Access (mine does as it is standard feature here in Oz). That means that with the key in the pocket, I can unlocked the car by just pressing the door handle and proceed to start the car using the start/stop button without the key in the allocated socket. To lock the car, there is a groove in the upper part of the door handle and you swipe you finger and the car will lock. However, if you accidentally leave the key in your car and you attempt to lock the car by the swiping the door handle, the key is smart enough and does not allow the doors to lock to avoid locking yourself out. With comfort access, with the key in your pocket, the boot will sense the key and when you hold the boot handle, it will open automatically. So, there is no boot lever on the side of the driver seat. Additionally, if you leave your key in the boot (happenned before when my wife need to unload the groceries and accidentally left the key in the boot), the boot will close but not lock with signal light flashing. Initially, my wife wasn't sure what was happening until she realised that she left the key in the boot and when she retrieve the key, the boot allowed to be open. Of course, you can still conventionally lock the car by pressing the key button.
