It happens just before the car stops.....around when the gear downshifts to first gear. So naturally I thought this time its the same thing again, but mechanic checked and said my rear axle bush is okay. Instead he said its coming from the gearbox when the gear downshifts to first gear. Funny thing is that he says this is perfectly normal to have this slight thump.......but I never felt this thump until a month ago! ...... or maybe i've become more sensitive to sounds these days because I nowadays drive with the stereo on low. I've had this car for about 6 months now.Is this downshift sound normal? The mechanic is a well respected experienced ex-AB mechanic (I was told the dalai-lama consults him <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" class="smilie smilie--sprite smilie--sprite1" alt=":)" title="Smile    :)" loading="lazy" data-shortname=":)" /> He even challenged me to test drive some of the other E46's in his workshop to prove that this thump is normal....I politely declined. Thought I'd consult this forum instead.Is he right or is my gearbox showing signs of damage? Everything else with the gears seem perfect......no other funny sounds....acceleration is great, gearknob shifting is smooth and silent.</p></blockquote><p></p>
