The politicians are dumb because they could have easily done the following and gained quite a bit of brownie points: - make Euro 4 fuel as an option and let the oil companies take the initiative whether they want to offer it or not. - leave the subsidized Euro 2 in place. - set only a max ceiling for Euro 4 diesel, not a fixed price. Let the price float similar to RON97 and let the oil companies compete if they want to offer lower fuel prices. The consumer would get some advantage here. - have a token discount for Euro 4 diesel cars with engine capacities less than 1.6l for example. The cost of this can easily be recovered by the less/no subsidy on the Euro 4 fuels. - Proton would be forced/encouraged to have diesel cars as well, they can easily work with a European carmaker to get the engine like what they've done before. This will make their cars more attractive in the Australia/UK as well. - start harping that these politicians are the ones improving the air quality and moving towards better standards due to all of the above. I don't see how any of the above will affect them adversely in the next GE since the bulk of the initiative is on the private companies and the government is just setting the lead while keeping the cheap Euro 2 diesel around. But again I don't think the typical govt minister thinks this far ahead. Anyway this is a little bit off topic but I'd still welcome comments.
