Whats the diff with H1 & H3 , ok I know the base is different and if not mistaken H1 is longer than H3 but what is the difference in performance, is H1 suppose to be brighter than H2 and so on..what is the purpose for the difference. Why am I asking ...recently I changed my headlights to an Eagle Eye brand for E34 with angel eyes b4 this I was using also non oem headlights with angel eyes but from DEPO...Im also using HIDs. To cut the story short, after installing my beam was weird, the centre was black and the sides were lighted. So I took it back to where i installed them to rectify it as I thought maybe they installed the bulb wrongly but no there was no difference but when they adjusted the bulb by pulling it further away from the unit only was the beam normal...discovered that my hid bulbs were too long and as such was not correctly focused by the projectors....so I contemplated to go without HID. Back home I dismantled the headlights to diy the lights back to normal and it was only then that i discovered this lamps were made to use H3 bulbs and those nuts who istalled it just cut the base of the HID bulbs (its made of plastic) to fit it when they should have known it was for H3 (or they didnt know??)...How I knew, I had some H1 bulbs lying around and was trying to fit them but it just wont fit and I suspected something was not right...so I googled and found the reason, the base for the bulb was for H3....but afaik the E34's uses H1so why were this made to use H3's ...this is where my question is coming from whats the diff with H1 and H3 other than appearance, Im sure there is a reason to create H1, H3's and so on...Sifus Pls your knowledge much needed here..to me at least.

As far as my knowledge goes
1. H3 bulbs are used by manufacturers for small short space lights, for large coverage area i.e. fogs, side fogs, etc
2. H1 has a longer concentrated beam, thus favourite for running lights, longer throw not as large side coverage as H3 - low beam, projector style lights
3. H7 i believe its similair with the H1 but for reflector type headlights.

but surprisingly my volvo uses H1 for fogs.....

your eagle lights manufacturer maybe using different bulb due to patent and design rights.....me thinks....

H1's and h7's have a different base too.
If u are looking for brighter H1's, go for the osram night breakers, brighter by 90% than standard H1's. The philip's Vision plus aren't as bright.

Ah! Sifu teejay has spoken, FYI my E34 fogs also uses H1..

since my stupid lamps now have to use H3's what would you recommend ...for HID and Normal Halogen's

Using H7 and H1 Osrams , and its much brighter than Philips vision......but still can't beat my e30 HIDs.......

If you use HIDs, you need to get the bulb to the concentrated center of the projector beam, else your beam will be all over the place, and defeats the HID purpose. You can DIY the HID bulb by using shims, move it back and forth untill you get a good beam on the road, then add the shims and then seal it via black temp silicon.

If you go H3, so far i recommend Osram 90% extra beam thingy....maybe philips will come up with 120% or sumthing......

Astroboy,

thnks for the pics of the different types of bulbs available...but why the hell do they have to come out with somany different types???

Maybe he thinks you dunno the differences between H1,H2,H3, etc......:eek::eek:...hahaha!!

WHatever bulb you put, make sure your headlight adjuster works.....i have it and probably the only e30 that has it , can blind on coming cars with a flick of a switch.....:thefinger:

I also found out that the later versions(95- ) are gyroscopic, i go downhill, it tills up by itself, i go uphill, it goes down to light up the road.....

i gave my older version to 535i....

If not sure, don't touch it.. :p I see all those types also I pengsan.. :p

Why HID? Brighter so can blind people or you want to save electricity so alternator less burden? Definitely not because of the temperature color right? If just the color u want, then just get a halogen bulb has is color coated lor.. :p

I am looking for yellow fog lamp bulb for my E90 bumper light (too many blue lights around, boring!).. so it looks cool at night, like the InitialD AE86.. :p I wonder what type of bulb izzit?

Why HID? All the while have been using HID but H1 now this stupid set of lamps use H3, so easiest way out is to look for H3 HID bulb otherwise have to redo wiring to use back normal Halogen Bulb.

make sure you look for 4000k-4350k as it looks still stock and wont attract attention

its also has the highest lumens rating, i.e. candlelight output at its highest

Yup thats what Im looking for...thanks for the warning.

The reason why you have a black spot is because the focal length is wrong due to the different in length.

That why when you move the bulb in and out, you will find that it will shine brighter or dimmer due to the focussing of the light that is being reflected by the reflector. Take note there is a focus lense for the low beam.

That why when you want to retrofit HID, you must get H1 HID bulb...

Jarance

thats the problem, when I use H1 got black spot bcos those Eagle Eye lamp was design to use H3 which is shorter than H1.
So when using H1 when pull further out the focus is correct but then its not in position already to sit on the base so hopefully the H3 bulb which is shorter should solve the problem...have ordered a pair which cost me RM180 and it better hell work.

XXX, consider that 1st july that JPJ will start ops HID.....

so time being, please put in H3...

Bro XXX, I hope you dont mind I share your thread?

I am keen to ask fellow forumers and members where can I buy OSRAM NIGHT BREAKER? How much is cost for H1 and H3 also possible for H4..

Time for us to put our HIDs under our bed for a few months... None of our original bulbs can give us the statisfaction of brightness.

Many thanks inadvance
