Hi, Just reviewed and test drove the 320d. In summary - whilst the car's dynamics are impressive, its interior presentation has much to be desired - bland.... Bland - when compared to what one gets overseas. No iDrive nor info display. What should be a nice console that integrates the instrument cluster and info display is replaced by one of the cheapest looking console. The gear pedestal is wasted space and ugly without the iDrive. Any idea if the iDrive and display can specced in the 320d package?

For a CBU, adding options is within reach. For a CKD, it's really not worth it. CKDs are spec-ed only for the options that have been decided upon by the distributor, and don't come fitted with the required wire harnesses, interfaces and control units for various options. It will cost a ridiculous amount to add options like iDrive. If you really want a 320d with iDrive, it'll be more cost-effective to get a CBU or recond with iDrive.

To give you an example, I enquired about fitting simple Voice Input in my CKD unit. If my unit had been a CBU, it would only cost about RM2k+. But as it's a CKD and would need additional wiring harnesses and other such innards, it'll cost RM20K+. Not worth it.

i have yet to find a parallel importer bringing in a diesel. Does anyone know and how much is the price range for a 320d or 520d/530d?

i thought the local 320d is tuned to take our diesel...if buy from recond will it not create any problem?

I was informed that the 320d Sports available in M'sia are actually CBUs. Does it mean that the wirings, interfacing & controllers are ready for the RM2K installation? TQ.

Then the chances are better! But installing iDrive won't be RM2k lorr...there's a lot more to retrofit. For Voice Input, a CBU would only need the module plus activation charges, and that alone was RM2K! :) You need to ask the SA to get the technical dept to check whether it's possible and what the cost would be.

Hi there, to me the dashboard without the idrive looks quite good. For me the idrive is a nice gadget to have but not a necesity. The performance of the car that counts

Scwhepss, does that mean E92 320i can install iDrive too? It's CBU.

Bro Venceladus, I have no idea whether it's possible or not. You'd have to ask a dealer or BMWM. But consider that to install iDrive, a lot of things have to be retrofitted, including a complete new dash and gearbox console. And iDrive interfaces with almost everything in the car, so heavens knows what else will need to be changed. The cost will be very high even if it's possible. Is it worth it? IMO, it's better to buy a car that comes with iDrive rather than retrofitting an existing non-iDrive car.

Glock,

Our diesel is now 500ppm of sulphur compared to the 3000ppm some months back. Which for all intent and purposes is a big advancement for many recent generation Mercs CDi and BMW xxxd. With the previous 3K ppm the cats tend to clog up by about 60-70K km. But with the current 500 ppm it is good for most but the latest generation of exhaust cleaning systems like particulate filter.

Thus I imagine an imported recon diesel car would at least be 3 years old, and if the particulate filter is removed, more likely has no ill effect due to our current diesel.

More critical, with the previous 3K ppm, if one didn't use 100% synthetic engine oil, there were high possibilities of the EGR being damaged, say after 70K km.

Agree Schweppes. Remember oneof the SA's telling me they did a retrofit of iDrive on an E60 3-4 years ago and the bill came to over 20K

20k!? That's cheap!

A friend of mine itchy hand went to outside accessories shop retrofit bluetooth interface and the foreman fried the iDrive during the process. The E60 was under warranty then, it was a 2005 unit, without Bluetooth. But warranty for iDrive was voided due to the tempering from 3rd party foreman. He was billed RM30k to replace just the iDrive !!

I read that BMW UK sells their 2010 320d SE with the display and iDrive as standard. From the accompanying photos, the interior looks really comfy and expensive, about matching against the new W204 C250 CGi Mercs.

I read in What Car magazine that in UK the 320 d msport and 325msport almost the same price abt 30k pound. Both come with 1drive . over here 325 is abt 50k more. So I guess if we want the same spec as the 325, it will cost extralah. I somewhat feel that we are paying lesser for the 320d. May b this is due to the introduction promo of the diesel models in Malaysia

Not surprised at it being standard in the UK. I almost rented a 320d last year (it was iDrive equipped). Opted for the 520d instead (also equipped with iDrive). Every car I saw in the BMW Park Lane showroom was iDrive equipped. Considering that their GPS maps are far more detailed than ours, and they get traffic updates via radio that link to the iDrive, I won't be surprised if a majority of buyers there want iDrive.

That's the point. I wish BMW M'sia gives the option of either the "Sport" (minimum) spec 320d as now or the "executive" spec that incorporates all those informative aids and comfy items as in UK.

In this score MB M'sia is now doing a far better job with all their current models.
