Yes, that's the vaccum pump. Quite an important mechanism for the valvetronic engines. It pumps vaccum for the brake servo. Failure of this unit will cause the brakes to feel hard. Further neglect will result in engine oil to being pump into the brake servo thus causing brake failure. From my understanding it's a common problem but the funny thing is not many member here discuss about this problem. So my advise to the valvetronic owners, please ask your mechanic to check this vaccum pump on your next visit to them. Was informed by local parts distributors that it cost more than RM900 and that's only a German OEM replacement part. I also checked with Singapore ,an original BMW unit cost SGD450.00 So the big question : Is there any repair kit out there? An indication of seriousness of this problem:

RECALL: 2002-2008 BMW 7-Series

NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V446000 www.nhtsa.dot.gov

Manufacturer BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC

Recall Date: SEP 30, 2010

Potential Number Of Units Affected: 198352

Description SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM

Summary BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 5-SERIES, 6-SERIES, AND MODEL YEAR 2002-2008 7-SERIES VEHICLES.
