From what I know, there are only three different keys that BMW provides. The standard key for all locks (they provide two of this). One valet key that operates door locks and the ignition, but unable to operate glove compartment and boot. And one emergency key, narrow plastic key with no remote, for emergency situations like this. You've gotten the car from AB and not some sneaky dealer who could have messed with the locks or anything like that? You're sure the key is able to enter fully? It would be hard to tell if there was a small stone that got into your keyhole and is preventing the entire key from entering. If only one millimeter off, the key won't be able to turn at all. Furthermore, you said you've always been using the remote to lock and unlock the door. It might be possible of dirt inside the locking cylinder after so long of not using it.
