E39: vibrations when accelerate

Dear E39 sifus,IssueOf late, I can feel slight vibrations when you accelerate from 1st or 2nd gear in low speed (start & stop traffic conditions). You can only feel it when you accelerate from 0 to 60kph. Above that speed, no issues at all. It's periodic which gives my mechanic "headache". Sometimes, it's there and when you send it to your mechanic, nothing happens :stupid:!It's not from the steering, tyres, engine or gearbox but I believe something to do with the transmission. One mechanic suspected it could be the drive shaft or "long shaft" which is not aligned?Wonder if anyone of you have experience this and able to share & recommend remedy?Thanks

could be ur gearbox mounting.. i had this problem, especially when accelerate from dead start.. slight judder from under carriage..

Jerman, I had a similar experience on my E34. Ah Meng (M Speed USJ) tested the car and said it was a torque converter issue. Symptoms are the vibrations is only between 2-3 gear just as the tranny is about to shift gears.

Whatever it is, don't go to Mspeed. Like my fren with his E34, you may end up with a gearbox overhaul costing thousands that is unnecessary when a fix only costing a couple of hundred was the real solution in the end. If you want more details, I'll be happy to put you in touch with him.

Thanks bro for the head's-up. I don't think it has anything to do with the gearbox/torque converter.

Yes, someone told me that before but I have changed the gearbox mounting recently. May need to re-check it again. TQ

yes, please check the mounting.. mine was also the same, found out that my rubber coupling, g'box mounting, center bearing + nylon bush all gone.. changed it, drives like a dream.

Jerman, have your long shaft center bearing checked. that could be a possible cause.

Must be due Long shaft bearing sangkut2 which cause the long shaft to wobble and not balance.
Normally you can just change the mounting...and if still got vibration...then need to do long shaft balancing....

Appreciate all the prompt feedback. Got the car check thoroughly yesterday and found out that the vibration was caused by the gearbox rubber mountings.

3. Yes, if the above did not resolve the issue then the bearing need to be checked.
4. safrul, if the vibrations & sound (from under carriage still persist), then I believe it's time to replace the long shaft

I also experienced this on my E90. Sent to BMWorld Desa Pandan for check up but still could not confirm the root cause..Exhaust mounting are OK.They suspect could be wheel bearing or just the tyre since my tyre pressure is 270kpa..

Still monitoring.

Any idea where we can get the shaft balanced. I having vibration probs with my e34 and have changed gearbox, engine mountings, center bearing as well. The rpoblems got worse after changing the ceter bearings.

Kinda suspect the mechnaic did not put it back in the correct position or mught have dropped the shaft.

Vibration is a very "irritating feeling" in driving. You need to specify when do you feel the vibrations and where is it coming from?

When...........?

1. high speed (100 kph and above)
2. medium speed (50-100kph)
3. low speed (below 50 kph)
4. when idling (morning only or all the time?)

Where...........?

1. wheels
2. engine
3. transmission
4. cabin
5. exhaust

No need change the gearbox....what you need is just do the long shaft balancing.

Normally non-experience mechanic will go round the and round telling that you need to change the mounting, then gearbox, then longshaft which will cost you tons of money end of the day...any they will happily can buat makan besar from the money you throw to them.

They do not what to remove the long shaft because there is a lot of work, to remove the exhaust, remove the cover, take out the long shaft, send to engineering to knock out the 2 bearing at the long shaft, weld it and perform balancing.....Too much work....!

Replacing with 2nd hand long shaft will not solve the problem because of some of them already not balance, or bengkok due to poor storage from the chop shop.

Question....why long shaft become not balance...:
Answer:
The long shaft not balance because the long shaft got minor bengkok (which you cant notice from bare eye)
1) Due to the bearing at the long shaft - not smooth due to wear and tear and DUE TO DUST/SAND get trapped inside the bearing.
2) Gearbox mounting already koyak.
3) long shaft rubber mounting already koyak.

The cost to perform long shaft balancing including labour is between rm400-rm500....
Mers and BMW will have long shaft problem if the car is above certain age....and this is common.

if you have the vibration and u suspect due to long shaft, do not force the car...or else the long shaft will become more not balance....
What you can do...if you accelerate....and you feel the vibration....release your pedal and gently step on you accelerator pedal before get this fix.

If you are coming from Ampang on MRR2, go past the overhead bridge that turns to Pandan Indah / Pandan Mewah. About 300 meters after the underpass, there is a turning to the left i.e. immediately after the block of apartments. Take this left turn. About 200 meters ahead you will approach a traffic lights. Steven's corner will be on your far left while a Used Car lot will be on your right.

At this traffic light, turn right. About 100 meter ahead there is an opening to turn left. (Opposite Balai Polis). Make a left turn here and you will be facing the side lane of two blocks of shop houses.
