Hello all,

i think my abs module has finally given its way for a replacement. i bought the car with both the abs and asc lights lighting up which i did not realize about it due to the car dealer put black tapes to hide the light.

the car drove with no problem whatsoever until recently the speedometer stopped working. it was diagnosed that all 4 my wheel speed sensors have problems and they were all replaced. unfortunately that did not solve the problem. and recently i scanned the abs module and it showed red bar status when reading so i assumed it was my abs module that creates the problem.

so my questions are.
can the old module be repaired?
how much is the used module from chop shop? and where to source it?
how can we check the used module from the chop shop is working fine?
can the abs module be diy? any coding required?

thanks all.

For e39, there is an repair kit of the ABS module of the ABS pump and it is much cheaper than getting the used one. But u will need a basic programming after change module.

If you change with chop shop abs module no need coding anymore. Just plug and play. There are 2 types of abs modules, which type that your car using now ?

Abs failure in e39 is quite common due to the position of the pump near heat source (exaust manifold). The best way is change to new unit and put on heat shield to prolong the life of module. I was quoted by mechanics the cost of changing to new abs module n programming is rm 1700 - 2000.
Just my opinion.

Just sharing..

wah....i like the 4th pic from the top....got cooling duct summore.....but then over time dirt will be introduced.

bro huskar,i also have replaced all 4 of my wheel speed sensor but one at a time.On one occasion I got a faulty new replacement sensor ie the abs and asc light did not go out.even a scan still faulted the 'new' sensor.i managed to persuade wong of bav auto USJ to give me another replacement and that fixed it.

just a possibility that one of your 'new' wheel speed sensor could be faulty as well.

to your questions :

1.can the old module be repaired? - yes....have read it in a u/s forum but unlikely in malaysia
2.how much is the used module from chop shop? and where to source it? circa rm 1200-rm1500....
3.how can we check the used module from the chop shop is working fine? - cannot.fit and see.no good bring it back
4.can the abs module be diy? any coding required? yes...see #1.coding no if repaired.

gud lak bro

this is also common problem in E46, i just replaced mine from chop shop costing rm 1,400 for the module, Rm150 for installation and Rm150 for 2 units of wheel speed sensors for the ABS. Did all at Kg Melayu Subang.

thanks for sharing the info and the photos bro. likewise bro moots photo no 4 seems to be an attractive solution.

thanks for sharing your experience. based on what i have gone through i don't think that the problem is coming from the speed sensors. before only the front left showed error and the sensor was replaced new but unfortunately the problem is still there. only until recently the other 3 speed sensors showed error so i replaced all including the newly change front left sensor. to date only one is not showing the error which is the front right. i read that the front right sensor is the one that sends signal to egs for gearshift which i concur based on the improvement that i felt in gear shifting right after the said sensor was replaced. below is the dtc shown by my bmw scanner 1.4

ABS -> 1F/FF - Wheel speed sensor rear right
21/FF - Wheel speed sensor front left
1E/FF - Wheel speed sensor rear left

which chop shop did you get yours? looks like i have call several shops and get their quotations.

my mechanic source it on my behalf, he marked up a bit but since I dont have the time to shop around I think the price is fair.

A new OEM unit cost RM1900, so is it worth to get an used one at RM1500?

I was quoted RM2,400 by Bavarian Auto for my model which is the old ASC unit

i think old asc units only cost about 1500 last i heard. you dont need the whole thing, only the black box and not the pumps

Nowsday it should be around rm1.5k for new module.

Do you know where to get it? I'm still not buying any yet. Still searching for the best solution.

The black box is just the module right? Does it need recoding if installed new?

Very good info.

I am also having the same problem. Took over the car from my dad 1 month back and still in recuperating progress.
I am browsing around Chan Sow Lin and will update back once i have found it.
