It's a marketing strategy, with similar horsepower for the 325i and 328i, the newer 328i might not sell well if the 325i is still selling. Then they reverse it for the E46. It started with 320i(2.0), 323i(2.5) and 328i(2.8) in its range. then they dropped the 328i(2.8), bring in the 330i and give the 2.5 back to 190+ hp with the 325i badge. Then increased the 2.0 to 2.2 with 170hp. So the 6 cylinder range in the E46 had 320i (2.2 170hp), 325i(2.5 190hp) and 330i(3.0 230hp)</blockquote>
