the E36 325i has 190hp but the E36 323i (with 2.5liter engine) has 170hp. the M20B25 in the E30 325i aledi has 170hp. no way the E36 325i has 170 horses as well. The M52B28 (328i) has only 1 horsepower more than the M50TUB25 (325i Vanos) but has more torque (40Nm). The E36 323i is a different story. It's detuned to slot in between the 320i and the 328i, after the 325i stopped production and replaced with the 328i. It's a marketing strategy, with similar horsepower for the 325i and 328i, the newer 328i might not sell well if the 325i is still selling. Then they reverse it for the E46. It started with 320i(2.0), 323i(2.5) and 328i(2.8) in its range. then they dropped the 328i(2.8), bring in the 330i and give the 2.5 back to 190+ hp with the 325i badge. Then increased the 2.0 to 2.2 with 170hp. So the 6 cylinder range in the E46 had 320i (2.2 170hp), 325i(2.5 190hp) and 330i(3.0 230hp)
