FYI, all the facelifted E30 318i(4 doors) and 318is (2 doors) and all the E36 318i and 318is in the USA were equipped with the M42B18 engines. there are none M40B18 engines in the USA. And IMHO, if the 318is were bought into Malaysia as an official model, the 325i would not have sold as well as it did. the M42 engine would have closed the gap on the 325i (lower CC = lower roadtax, 4cylinder = perceived lower consumption and lower maintenance). the E36 318is came in 4 door guise when the M44B19 was introduced during the final stages of the E36 lifecycle. capacity increased to ~1900cc translates to better torque but same hp ratings. However, it has a cast iron crankshaft as opposed the forged steel crankshaft in the M42B18. Also the OBD2 on the M44 restricted modding potential for the engine. So for the modheads, the M42 is still the better choice of the 2 '318is' engines.
