hi UDM lovers,i'm buying new AFM soon, and would like to confirm the BMW & Bosch part numbers. had made mistakes twice in the purchase before, and would like to get it right this time.pls help..thanks!

suggest to take your old part to the shop and compare with the new. this way, you can blame the retailer for giving you the wrong part! hehe!!

thanks hellraiser for your suggestion.

however, first things first. would like to verify whether my car has catalytic converter or not? i would assume that my car (e36, 318A, 1996, M43) has.

okay, here is the problem.

i have been using this AFM (bosch part no. is 0280 202 134), without knob, meant for 318 WITH catalytic converter, for quite some time, until it was faulty. and checking from real oem's website, the BMW part no. tallies (12621734655/134). meaning, the BMW part no. embossed on the AFM is the same as shown on the website. however, from this website, it shows that this model has been discontinued.

so, i changed to a used AFM with the same bosch part number, which i bought from Chu Seng Auto. the AFM was fine. lasted me another 6 months. then the shutter jammed, and car engine shut down after exiting the toll.

fed up, so, what i did was, i went to BA PJ and bought a new AFM. this AFM looks fishy, cos the box wasn't Bosch box, and looked like it has been opened before. So, when i asked the people there, they claimed that this is the correct one, cos, on the AFM, there is a printed sticker with the BMW part number (1362 7558785). The Bosch part numbers are 0280 202 208 &
0280 202 213. this AFM has a knob, and the socket is not a direct socket. through another converter.

i feel this is not the correct AFM, as my car's idling is not stable ever since, and as well as during gear change, the rpm will drop quite a lot, before up again. furthermore, there's a bit of black exhaust smoke, which after a week, my rear bumper near the exhaust is literally black.

so, after some checking again from internet, i found out that Bosch part no. 0280 202 213, actually belongs to BMW part number 1362 1734657/213! which means that this AFM is meant for 318 WITHOUT catalytic converter, whereas, all along i have been using AFM for 318 WITH catalytic converter.

so now, does any one of you changed to a new AFM recently? pls share info on this issue. from real oem website, it shows BMW part no. 1362 7558785 to be the correct part number, but how do i really verify this? meaning, what is the actual Bosch part number embossed on it? i may be paranoid, but i suspect BA PJ, gave me the wrong AFM by printing the BMW part number and sticking it on the wrong AFM.

thks

jiminy crickets! sorry to hear about your problem, bro. i had the same problem and sent it to a shop with diagnostic checkup. problem solved after buying second hand AFM ($500)

i'm just not so comfortable with used AFM, cos if unlucky, it may break down when you least expect it to.

anyway, i just bought a new AFM (rm2,433.11) from Sapura Auto and it is the SAME type of AFM as the one which i bought from BA PJ previously. looks like i was wrong about my previous thoughts about BA PJ.

installed the new AFM, and performance was slightly better. however, still has slight idling & exhaust fumes problem. Sapura Auto mech said that may be other parts failure like catalytic converter. will send in soon to diagnose. aarrgh.. pocket pain.. btw, generally, how is Sapura Auto's service & costs?

now i have 2 AFM (BMW part no:13627558785). let me know if you guys need it. selling one cheap cheap.. price is negotiable..

bro, there are certain parts i buy original and certain parts i compromise abit as long as it doesn't effect the day to day performance of the car. I had the same frustration as you and sent the car to Keng Chuan Electrical Auto Service in Sri Damansara (019-2138399).

Very reliable chap. Can do full diagnostics for your ride plus upgrade your chip for that extra boost. Nice guy

problem solved at last!

apparently, the mech who changed my oxigen sensor previously, DID NOT reset the chip.
now after reset, engine is running smoothly & exhaust fumes are normal. caused me unnecessary stress for almost a year!

bro, u mentioned about the upgrade of chip for extra boost.. kinda interested. pls elaborate more on the extra boost & costs.

thks!

Hi Hamzah,

You may want to first try and spray the ECU (DME) with contact cleaner, both the external connectors and internal board. The contact cleaner is available from Ace Hardware. I think it cost about rm20-rm30. You can check the internet on how to do this.

If that doesn't help, you should consider buying a new AFM (BMW part no:13627558785). This is the replacement part number for 0280202134. You never know when the second hand ones will break down. My second hand one broke down after about 6 months.

Just my 2 cents.. Good luck!

I have posted a DIY on AFM repair. I have repair my AFM before. Usually, it the vane that get stick up.

the MAF for M43 engine was made of Aluminium housing, that cause the cost to increase
twice the price of MAF for M52 engine., :34: nightmare la...
people though M43 4-pots 1.8L should be economy, but the MAF was twice the cost from the
M52 's MAF....

hamzah,

The DIY for AFM is posted in the DIY section but it is available to official members.

I will email the procedure if I can find the file. It is in PDF format. Let me check first.
