There is no comparison between the two.  Not only the E39 looks better, it drives a lot better as well, NVH is significantly improved, steering is more direct, precise and less free play as a result of using a rack and pinion steering rack instead of a recirculating ball system.  As for maintenance costs, the E39 will costs a lot more than an e34. Suspension components are all aluminium alloy, meaning to say you cant just replace the worn bushes and ball joints. Similarly the shock absorbers are all made of alloy and hence doubled the price of normal e34 absorbers.  There are many well known wear tear parts for the E39, ABS sensors, Airbag sensors (at the safety belt) and etc. I too was deciding to get an E39 sometime back until my mechanic talked me out of it and showed me some bills of his other customers (just dont expect the cost to be a little more than an E34 or E36). But then again, as mentioned earlier the E39 is truly a driving machine that offers the ultimate sheer driving pleasure and till today will hold its own against the best from Nippon Land. <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" class="smilie smilie--sprite smilie--sprite1" alt=":)" title="Smile    :)" loading="lazy" data-shortname=":)" /></blockquote>
