did you read the whole article and understand it before you come to conclusion that the RFT's is the main issue?

Having read the article from bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog, it is the 19 inch rims that is supposingly causing the damage.

I saw the entire show. So I am jus summarising it to you guys.

Agree with t2ribena, the title of the thread is very misleading, u can be sued!

Just a warning.

Because BMW UK dismiss the issue saying it is driver's problem. Even BMW salesperson being told to say that. That is what watchdog has been airing. Few eps. That one, and 2 eps after that (you have to watch full version of watchdog for the followup on bmw).

One Beemer got so annoyed since BMW does not want to replace his tyres, he went to MIRA to test them out and then showed BMW UK the results. BMW replaced his tyres without any charge. Almost all other owner's claim were dismissed and they had to fork out for their rim replacements.

Roads in UK same condition as roads in Malaysia. It seems that potholes were the cause of the crack in the tyres.

I can understand fanboyism towards beemer since its a beemer forum, but criticism should be noted. I am not criticism a beemer, but the run-flat tyres. Also you would not notice rims crack as it crack on the inside, if outside, then visible.

Omg... should i change my run flat tyre immediately???? Help me..

No, but what UK drivers mentioned is that, the cracks come after running over potholes. So I suggest you check your rims if you are unfortunate to run over potholes. I am not sure if Malaysia equivalent MIRA this case PUSPAKOM make individual test?

I suggest you watch that feature, and the 2 full episodes of watchdog for the response on the subject. Watchdog keep tabs on BMW throughout the show but more impromptu with input from audience rather than that feature. Watchdog only reports on stories which the public comments, or want to investigate, not go investigate stuff which is of no interest.

UK consumer rights quite strong, but the resistance from BMW also strong. Just imagined, if BMW made a recall, that will affect their brand. Since its very hard to prove that it is a rim design flaw, I think they will quietly solve this rim in their next updated version. Also German roads are like PLUS roads everywhere. UK roads are more like malaysian roads, some good, some bad. It is sad when you hear the stories from Watchdog. 20 year driving 5 beemers and first time got this problem.

"a bit rough" is not a good enough reason to trade your bullet proof RFT for normal tubeless tyre.. we don't have spare tyre, thus when hit with a flat, we are just sitting ducks.. imagine traveling with ladies and kids in the car at night on a deserted highway. It can be a horrifying experience. Think twice!

I am going tubeless too but it has nothing to do with roughness.. moolah deficiency.. :(

I am switching to non-RFT because of the harsh ride of the current ones. My back is killing me.

I will equip myself with a mobility kit and AAM membership.

After having been thru 3 high-speed blow-out on the highway, those 2 thing are enough.

But I must note that with only 1mm to the wear marker, the tyre is still great in the rain. They are the best wet weather tyres I've ever used.

i advice bmw owner;s here to get a liquid motor compressor kit from bmw.good for those non-rft tyre owner. very useful,i use it last time when my car tyre puncher,i lazy to change spare tyre. i use to seal it then quickly go nearest petrol kiosk add more air before to go back my shop to change tyre...

I dun sell this item, pls dun ask/pm me how much!..cheer

Bro,

The " liquid motor compressor kit from bmw" is called a BMW Mobility Kit.

It is OK for a normal small puncture. If you've had a blowout like me, these kits are useless.

Ingress Auto seels the BMW Mobility Kit for RM670. Comes compete with air compressor & 1 bottle of sealant. Sealant is good for one use only. Then u just buy another replacement bottle of sealant, thats all.

Hi,

I saw this few months ago on BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2009/10/bmw_alloy_wheels.html

Basically Watchdog is like consumer focus groups but more power to consumer. It mentions that the run flats are easily damaged unlike normal tyres.

Dude,

Did u read the entire content? AS others have said, your title is misleading.

Run flat tire is more resistant to damage than normal tires, especially the side wall is reinforced to support the weight of the car in the event of a puncture.

Will normal tires be more resistant to damages when hit onto a pothole?

19 inch rims will always be more susceptible to cracks, more so performance forged rims that dont bend but crack. Go to any rim repair shop, and see the number of cracked rims used with normal tires.

Run flat tires are proven to save lives, and of course the disadvantage is price and loss of comfort.

Cheers

I went to Honda service center to inquire about their tyre repair kit for a friend who needed one and was shocked to find out that they were selling the kit for almost RM1K which included the compressor and a tyre repair kit. I ask them to double check and they confirm that is the price!
