Hi guys, I was directed from autoworld.com.my by fabianyee....Guys, Got a bit of an issue on my E34: There is a clunking sound whenever I go over uneven patches or bumpy roads from the LEFT REAR of my car. At first I thought it was the shocks, but after checking it...no probs there. My mechanic said it could be due to worn exhaust mountings (which I suspected) which would cause the exhaust to hit against the innner side of the bumper over uneven roads. I just changed the mountings on Sunday 20/3/2005 but the sound is still there! Any ideas on this? Thanks 5

try the rear shock mounting. very common item to fail and give the symptoms as described.

check your rear brake pads. does it make the sound during braking? mine had the same problem. cause: weak brake pad return springs.

Sounds does not happen when braking, only over uneven and bumpy roads while driving normally. I will check the pads nonetheless and also the mountings for the rear shocks.

Thanks a bunch guys. Will update you with results.

okay, Myfive..

for your car there's a lot of posibilities of the noise coming from the front, mid or rear.. a very experinced mechanic should be able to sort it out.. for the e34, sometimes the sound could be related elsewhere.. i had a share of guess work for my car..

i can give you a posibility of a few items, but it might not be right.
my suggesttion bring it to our tt and we can tell you what is it wrong..

posible list at the front:
1. worn ball joints
2. worn centre link
3. worn side steering links
4. broken asorber mounts
5. asorber shaft bend/ kaput
6. lower arm bush kaput
7. upper arm kaput
8. engine mounting kaput
9. gearbox mounting kaput
10. steering box kaput/ inside ball koyak !
11. etc

at the rear:
1. arm bushes koyak
2. rear sub frame bush worn
3. ptiman arms worn
4. asorber koyak
5. asorber top mount worn
6. rear axle mount koyak
7. etc..

regards.

My problem is exactly like yours. I changed my rear absorber and suddenly after oversteereed at one tight corner..then ...the nighmare...the clunking sound emerged.

I changed top absorber mounting and the sound still there...paid rm200 just for rear left top absorber mounting.....

if you found solution for that, please update it here.

I guess this problem is more common than I thought.

When is the next TT? I would like for you guys to look over the car, definitely beats me and my wallet trying to figure it out.

Thanks

somehow i still think it's the brake pads. we'll see. i'm doing a little experiment this weekend if time permits.

Tumpang thread...

Me too just changed my rear absorbers but the ride is still quite low... what could be the problem? Coil?

Cheers,
Geo

Naza2,

What kind of experiment have you got in mind? This sounds interesting....

one easy way to eliminate my theory: remove the rear caliper and drive over bumps

experienced the same problem on my e36 sometime back. sounded like the exhaust hitting the chassis when going onto uneven roads. I think the mech replaced some arm bushes in my case and the irritating clunking sound is gone.

naza2,
Thanks for the idea, will give it a try over the weekend as well

c-square,
Do you remember which arm bushes specifically?

Thanks

myFive.... sorry dude. Wasn't there when the mech changed it. Just ask your mech to check all of them anyway

myFive. becareful tho. i don't guarantee any safety issues here.

to remove the caliper is one easy job but you have to seal/plug your hydraulic system. if not u got no stopping ability at all. just my 0.02. it might not be a good idea at all. that's why i said experiment. i hope you are aware of this.

naza2,

Not too worry, all this will be carried out under the supervision of my trusted mechanic. I would also expect him to be driving the car under those conditions... :p

I think I know what cause my clunking sound. It's exhaust support metal thing that went loose. Try 'goyang' your muffler and check whether the clunking sound is from there or not ?

mine's not. even with heavy shaking, the sound is still there. i changed my whole exhaust 2 weeks ago and this sound is still here. so its not the exhaust in my case.
