Chassis Stiffening

Autofoam chassis stiffening involves the injection of polyurethane foam into the cavities of your chassis, usually the door sill channels and the B-pillars.Besides stiffening the chassis, it has the side benefit of reducing road noise, vibrations and harshness.Recently advertised in Traffic magazine. Good stuff. Recommended.Standard price for e36 is RM1,280 for sill only and RM1,480 for sill and b pillar.Cost about RM200 more for e34.The guy doing it is quite friendly and if anyone is interested, I can talk to him to give lower price for club members.

How significant is the improvement for the NVH and stiffening ? Anyone tried it before ? I thought I read in the AW forum a while back that there might be some problems when the foam ages. What exactly that problem is I don't remember but I believe that it may just be a theory by one of the forumers.

Tyre roar is muted (not totally eliminated), car handles bumps better as less body flex. Simple experiment, knock the sill of your car from the outside. You should hear some hollow sound. Imagine if the cavity was filled up with something solid.The foam expands in the chassis as it cures. So virtually all pockets of air should be expelled. Thus, oxidation of the polyurethane foam is minimised. Due to the expansion and the stickiness of the material, it bonds with the metal inside the chassis.Tried burning it with petrol, poured acid on it to no effect.Worst thing u can do is get it on your clothes or skin. Very difficult to remove.
