. I can only speak for E30 and what I've learned since I've bought mine, a bit similar situation to yours. Agree that rust is the big danger when buying pre 1987 e30s. If you go to check out that 1984 one, make sure you pull up the carpets, check trunk, fender wells etc. If the car has had covered parking or previous rust repair it can be ok, but have to be really careful otherwise. If you can find a late-87 to 91 model with galvanized body it could save you a lot of headaches later, not only with existing rust but new rust. Try and get a compression test done before you buy, make sure that 2.5L is running ok. Set aside some money to replace belts (timing especially), pads, sensors, and other wear and tear items as soon as you get the car. Unless you're getting service records with the E30, which is rare, you will find a lot of items will need replacing for safety and peace of mind. As for between E30 and E28, depends on you and what you need out of the car. E28 more spacious, E30 more compact, image is a bit different as well. I would say if you decide to sell later on, you might have an easier time selling the E30.
