You should change when you feel something not right with your braking system or some "eeee" sound from your brakes. Don't play-play with brakes. Like I always say, any dumb nut car can go fast.... it's stopping safely that's the most important.I myself felt my brakes were getting soft. So when went in for regular service recently, had mech change the brake pads and brake fluid too.
