Thought I'd get some feedback from the forum, especially guys who're also into Alfas...Was driving my friends' 156, parked in Bangsar Village had dinner and when we came back to the car, couldn't start it, not a click, not a whir nothing..Checked the horn, lights, windows everything working. Then decided to push start, it is after all a manual... and voila, it bursts into life...Only afterwards did the owner tell me it's been happening rather frequently of late. I'm sort of guessing it's the starter motor jammed but thought I'd get more feedback from you guys/gals first.Cheers,,Boon Han

starter motor jammed is not a common prob with the alfas. i'd check if its a dead battery. the selespeed pump is also supposed to come on to pressurize the system when u open the driver's door. this is indicated by a click and a faint whirr/buzzing sound. if u dont hear this, there could be a problem with the selespeed pump. this is a wear and tear part and it could be due for replacing.

best to take it to an alfa expert workshop and get it checked out. HHK Auto Line in USJ19 is acknowledged to be the best in the business for selespeed issues. i recommend u take it there.

good luck!

Hi there Redd..

Don't think it was a dead battery as everything was still working only couldn't start it, my first experience of jump starting a selespeed tonight..Will check if I hear anything in the morning...

Cheers..

It might be the STARTER porblem also. My car encounter once before....but change it already....everything...DONE!.

Like what Redd said....better go to HHK and check it first, ok?

Cheers. :)

guys....a little digression from the topic at hand (sorry-ar e23_728i). Does it cost a lot to maintain a 156 Selespeed? Redd, your experience?

To answer your question,

It depend on the previous owner (if your are buying 2nd car), if the previous owner is TLC to the car, then it should be alright....not very expensive to maintain it...just a normal service and Ta-Da! Problem free.

Of course about the wear and tear thingy like brake, tyre and timing belt....that one it depend how u drive lor....when time is up.....change it lor.....price wise is around Rm 2k ~ Rm3K.

For me....i think the actuator also consider wear and tear thing....coz i heard my mech said....it will last about 1 1/2 year to 2 years...then have to service already lor.....

If you are getting the brand new car....which is now selling under SAI, no worry lar...comes with 2 Years Warranty...hehehe...so no worry.

Did i left anything? Just let Redd explain.

heard a lot about the actuator thingy, which seemed to be the problem with the 156. What is it anyway?

the actuator is what engages the gears the selespeed gearbox. its a wear and tear item and needs replacing every few years.

the alfa engines are very reliable if u watch the oil levels. this is critical. if u are negligent in this area, the engine can blow up on u. this is a watchout as the TS engines can consume a fair bit of oil in normal operation. the V6 engines are bulletproof, no worries there.

there was an event recently where about 50 alfas of all ages ran insane speeds covering 1600kms over 3 days. even the old cars made it back ok. the cars are built to be run hard. but like a thoroughbred racehorse, u need to take care of it.
