Hi everyone

Been wanting to ask about the ambient lighting for a while but keep forgetting.

When I got my ride, I explored with the light setting etc and noticed the ambient lighting control.

However, whatever I do (classic or luxury mode / moving brightness control up or down), there is NO light whether the main car lights are switched on or off.

I got a little annoyed after googling the f30 ambient light pics and my wife reminded me that was one of the reasons why she liked the car (and asked how come I never wanted to use it) !

It has never worked from the day I got my ride - am I missing something here ? Appreciate any help / advice.

Not just beside the reading lights. The ambient light also lights up on all 4 door panels from the inside.

Thanks for everyone one who has posted - appreciate it.

For my case, there are NO lights at door panels nor foot rest area nor at reading lights

Just a tiny tiny light at the b-pillar - it can only be seen when the main lights are switch on. Under auto mode, it doesnt work.

Tsk tsk tsk..more than 1 year with 328, now only notice . . . .

If i not mistaking, the ambient light only LUXURY model have. Sport model trade it with electric sport seat....

All F30 models will have ambient lightning...from the 316i to the 335i. You will have lights at your inside and outside door handles, a strip of light on the door panels, front foot well lights and dim lights coming from the roof lights and central dashboard. I believe 320i and onwards will have the option to switch the light from classic to cool lightning while the 316i soldiers on with classic light.

You might want to try and adjust to max brightness of your ambient lightning in your iDrive. If that still doesn't light up then you have a problem there.

Thanks Simon/Sean

I think my lights dont work - nothing at foot area and certainly not at the inner door side.

I'll get AB to look into this - so rugi, after >1 year only find out haha

The front foot well area is the most easiest to notice as it is bright but the side door panel light can only be seen at night especially when you put your hand under it but as you have said you cannot see any light so there is an issue with your ambient lightning. Thank goodness you noticed it before your two years is up!

I had this issue as well thinking that BMW did not install the ambient light in my car. But after a few fiddle around, there actually is but very dim. The colour change from Classic (orange/amber) to Sport (Cool White) is most noticeable on your top panel where the small leds will light up your centre console either with orange or white. But it's dim. There is another two small led that will change colour at the reading light panel at rear seat.

As for the door panel strip, I think those like me with black leather find it super hard to be noticed. Turn the ambient lighting to MAX in iDrive and also the instrument lighting control to MAX (Located next to your headlight switches).
It will be more noticeable on dark environments though.

The footwell lighting, maybe you might want to get under the footwell to check. My car came with only driver side lighted up. I got curious and went under to check on the passenger side. There seem to be a light panel there, and I tried to open it up using a flat head screwdriver. It turns out that my LED wasn't connected to the car. LED Panel was there and dropped out when I open the light panel. I opened the bottom part of the glove box and found the wire is there. Connected it and it works! So much for paying BMW for a CKD version eh?

Hope that helps! If not...best to send to your dealer haha!
btw mine is a CKD 320d. I presume the lighting package should be same with all other series...

thanks Sean / Crescent

tried the console brightness control and maxed it - saw a glint of ambientness (only orange, white doesnt work).

will get the stupid thing fixed - even at max level idrive & console, can hardly see anything but the console lights are so bright like its yelling at me haha

Didnt check under the footwell area yet but will leave that to the AB team to fix.

cheers bros

Reviving an old treat.

Noticed the led strips underneath the black strip that runs along the 4 doors is not bright enough even though I turn the dial to max. The light is quite faint and only visible if I run my hand under the strip. How do you guys find the brightness in your F30?

hi everyone

i made a complaint to AB on this and they changed BUT the new set is dim like hell.

i aint happy and will pursue this - the ambient lights from the top front center on the car (the console above the rear view mirror) is bright can the light throw is easily 4-5". the strips at the car door panels cant event shine line 1".

at the rate things are - it aint ambient light but invisible lights !

sigh

You meant after you changed the strips along the car door turned out worst than before? AB acknowledged it should be brighter therefore proceed to file warranty?

Similarly the ambient light below the rear view mirror is ok on both amber (classic) and white (sports) setting in my f30, where I have no complain.

If it can't even shine 1" then its got to be bad but I think on mine it ain't bright either...don't tell me each light strip has its own brightness intensity??

For mine I can see the faint light of the light strip being reflected by the silver chrome door opener which tell me its working lol but yeah do let us know if you managed to get it brighter...

Previously hardly any light - now got light but it's below expectation. Have to turn my head to view strip before i can catch a glint of the light. V frustrating. it like it's almost not there..

So anyone has done DIY to the light strip at door panel to make it looks brighter? Reflector etc etc.
