Dear all,i recently got myself a e36 318 manual (M40) and im experiencing 2 problems. wanna see what u all think.1) Suspension :-i felt that my car is quite loose going over uneven roads, the sound of "gen glong gen glong" always can be heard,so frustrated with that, went to check the guy said the bush all is no problem. But it does not feel like a bmw already.and now when ever i go through smooth semen road(going into parking at my condo, for me), i can hear "kluk kluk" after every rotation . now it really feels like proton is also better than mine. (im using blistein b8 with koni spring) 2)Engine :-this happen when i rev my car around 4-5k , i can hear rattling sound coming from the engine, as if the car gonna break. ???Anyway, if anyone do experienced this few problems before can share here :)Thank you.

"kluk kluk" sound maybe your steering rack got problem... If absorber and lower arm bush no problem, high possibility steering rack...

engine gonna break... lot's of wear already.. M40 timing belt, very sensitive engine.. must have tlc..

im planning to convert to M50 later but now the engine still smooth, anyway, can't really find a good engine to convert.
will go and check the steering rack & the belt :)

Thanks guys.

1Jz is a good japanese engine for your car!! Hahaha

Anyway, please have your steering rack repair to avoid accident ya, plus its important to change your timing belt plus have the top overhaul.

Good luck

1. Control Arm busing worn out or torn.
2. Engine Mounting worn out.
3. Suspension Mounting worn out.

Most likely item 1 coz low speed and turn corner have this sound.

rev my car around 4-5k , i can hear rattling sound coming from the engine.
1. Most probably hydraulic lifter at the cam are worn out.
2. Tappet clearance need to be adjust.

M40 engine use rubber belt for the timing. Please changed at every 40,000 KM. I have use it to 60,000KM but not more than that.

M43 engine timing chain and dont need to be changed so often.

convert to M42B18 ....................

not many are as rich or as stingy as you are Lionel.....

anyway my tots are -
1. loose sounds possibilities
- steering rack tierod ends
-anti roll bar link rods-notoriously famous to wear out fast
-antiroll bar bushes
-could be a high possibilty for the ball joints - only a competant mech can test this properly, and its not just by looking at it or shaking with your bare hands
-kluk-kluk sound possiblities are absorbers, absorber mountings

2. rattling sound from engine
-possiblity of pinging, can't be sure unless i hear it live
-hydraulic tappets are at the end of its life, very high possiblity on M40s
-AFM dirty, clogged fuel injectors, stuck throttle plate, ditry throttle butterfly

and the list goes on.....just take it to a good experienced mech to get it properly diagnose

thanks thanks, btw, if changing to timing chain would be the best way i'll do it. anyone wanna guide? :)

M40 engine cannot use timing chain lah...

It just like putting diesel into your petrol car... :stupid:

Maybe Lionel advise should be taken..

for item no 2 :- being playing with M40 for a long time and as time goes by , the noise do appears again even after you've done a good overhaul job replacing all the wear and tear ...but after sometime you'll be at the same par again facing the noise again .....That's M40

Relatively low mileage for an M40..

Recommend that you flush and change ATF for the GB..

Bro,

His car is manual no need ATF but its good to change the gear oil too.
My suggestion go thru the E36 thread on maintenance. Get a good & honest BMW mech. Come to TT to meet E36 sifu & share experience. Anyway if goin for long term ownership convert to M50 engine for better performance. Good E36 half cut will cost around 8k. BTW E36 is a good car & last but not least banyak makan wang:love:
