May their souls rest in peace... 20 Dead in Malaysia Bus AccidentAn express bus overturned Monday on Malaysia's main highway, killing 19 passengers in one of the country's worst traffic accidents, police and news reports said. The 10 other people on the bus, including the driver, were hospitalized with various injuries, said a police officer at the scene in Bukit Gantang, about 125 miles north of Kuala Lumpur. "The roof (of the bus) was totally ripped off," said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give details to the media. National news agency Bernama reported that seven of the injured were in serious condition. The accident occurred before dawn on the North-South Expressway, which runs the length of the country from the Thai border in the north to the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula. Bernama said the bus was going downhill when it hit the curb, careened off the road and flipped over. Many passengers were flung out of the bus through the roof and others died inside when the sides of the vehicle were crushed on impact, Bernama said. While Malaysia's notoriously bad motorists are often involved in accidents, ( I highlighted this on purpose ) bus crashes are relatively rare and such serious ones with mass casualties even more infrequent.

Well,I'm not surprised. Even back at my trucking days...we the lorry drivers always hate the Bus Drivers.
We had an incident ,where we a bunch of truck drivers stopped a Bus Driver who's high on drugs when on the job.How we know which and who's the driver....hehe...!! Dont be surprised.

They dont seems to have awareness that the Safety and Lifes Passengers are on their hands....

New Sunday Times .

Accident in Nilai - front passenger died, driver injured.
Picture showed an E34 - WEM 4** silver color with ori BBS rims.

I beg to differ. Bus crashes are relatively common in Malaysia, although such high fatalities in one accident is uncommon. On our highways and especially on the Genting Highlands road. You would always read the same old excuses from the drivers and authorities, brake fail la, lorry parked in the emmergency lane without hazard lights la, driver sleepy or high on drugs la, etc...

Recent accidents involving buses: Taken from today's NST
  • Students swear off field trips after horrific crash -
Forty-four people cheated death when the bus they were travelling in crashed into a concrete barrier and landed on its side on the opposite lane of the North-South Expressway in Jelapang on Aug 8. In the 7.30pm incident, the driver of the schoolbus ferrying a group comprising 38 Form Six students and five teachers of SMK Putri, Kelantan, was believed to have lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp bend several kilometres before the toll plaza. The vehicle landed on its right side and slid for almost 100m along the expressway before coming to a halt against the steel guardrails. Miraculously, nobody died and no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Fifteen injured passengers were given outpatient treatment at hospitals.
  • 32 hurt as express bus overturns -
A Plusliner bus landed on its side after the driver lost control while overtaking another express bus at Km75.1 on the Karak Highway on Aug 11. Three passengers were warded in hospital while 29 received outpatient treatment for minor injuries. The bus was carrying 32 passengers from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur when the accident happened at 1.45pm.
  • Survivors won’t forget this bus accident -
Driver of bus, which was heading to Kota Baru from Johor Baru, lost control of the vehicle at Km38 of Jalan Kuantan-Segamat at 1.50am - July 7. Nine passengers, including the bus driver, were warded for serious injuries at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. Thirty-one passengers and assistant bus driver received out-patient treatment.

This is so so so NOT Right! 20 people lost their lives because of some big time screw up in our system. Corruption being rampant, one might suggest. Just reading today's report make 'my blood go upstairs'.
Quote:
- Bus of Death, accident waiting to happen
- Driver not fit for job
- Driver had 13 summonses and 2 warrants of arrest
- 20 year old bus had 19 summonses and DID NOT HAVE PERMIT to ply that route, blah, blah, blah
....and many many more blardy excuses. Tell us something that we all dont already know. Damn! What makes me sick is that all this lost of lives could have been avoided. Where were the authorities when we the public needed them to make public transportation safe. With 2 warrants of arrest issued why wasnt the driver arrested earlier? Isnt it mandatory of all public commercial vehicles to pass a stringent JPJ test for road worthyness before being given their CVL? It always takes an accident like this to reveal how shoddy our authorities are doing their job....or has this been 'overlooked' on purpose with some incentives on the side.
Transport Minister should resign, DG for Transport Ministry should resign, JPJ CLV dept. Head and Pengarah should resign too and many many other junior officers who allowed this bus company and their driver to murder 19 other innocent people.

why blame the authorities and not the bus company? Why did the bus company hire such a person in the first place?

The company is fully liable for the mishap. The company does not have to wait for the authorities to clamp them down as any company SHOULD provide the best products and services to its clients.

looks like everyone from the ministry has to resign but the bus company gets away scot free? -wierd-

well most bus driver now would have the impression that they are the pilots as upon what was said last night by a top gun. sheeshhh imagine now that they willbe more like flying a BUS rather than driving a BUS ...

darm... this is awfull ..

Many bus and lorry drivers are paid peanuts and earn based on distance travelled? Drivers have no choice but to speed so that they can earn more in one day. Who is the culprit to this? Who gives out crappy salaries to them?

With such low earnings, who would be attracted to the job? As you can expect.

Of course.

The latest is that the "authorities" have suspended the company's operations. It's Hot Potato Time / Pin the tail on the donkey / "Who wants to be a scapegoat" game show situation.

In the end, its all about the MONEY. The attitude of the top boys is: "I make money, screw everyone else". So as usual, the consumers / customers / deceased (god rest their poor souls) get shafted good and proper. If you're at the bottom of the food chain here, sooner or later you're gonna get it.

BOLEHLAND - The land of the freely corrupt.

And after the intial HooHah has died down, all Pledges / Promises / Lies to "do something about it" will be forgotten because of apathy and the media moving on to more interesting things such as Akademi Fantasia and the color of so-and-so's underwear.

Here people love history so much they want to see it over and over and over again...

Same like Mini Bus last time .
Commission base ... and they ended up terrorising the road ...

I think big companies like Transnational - has a base salary for the drivers. I cud be wrong, though.

Yes, Affan, the Bus company (Syarikat Kenderaan Bukit Gantang Sdn Bhd) is to be blamed more so but not soley and that's why we have laws and by laws to protect the consumer (passengers in this case). ...to see that they do not flout the law.

These are the people empowered to see to our (the society) safety. They have failed terribly and action, remedy and confidence must be instilled. Unfortunately, I dont see any on these coming.

If the authorities have been stringent and non corruptable, this driver wouldnt be driving and this bus wouldnt be allowed on be on the road and these people wouldnt have to die.

This incident will again 'die a natural death' and people will forget and go on with their lives in time to come.....of course, except for those who lost their loved ones......There will be no justice for them.

Obviously something is not right with the system. What remedy do you propose?:smokin:

Cheers

Well said Okow. It really saddens all Malaysians that something that is avoidable can keep rearing its ugly head in this country. Till when will the authorities involved finally buck up and enforced the necessary regulations in order to protect passengers and road users alike.

The problem in this country is lack of ENFORCEMENT. Everything also can kau-tim and settle. Go to JPJ Padang Jawa and see old tires being mounted back onto lorries and buses after the mandatory inspection. No one gives a F#$% because no one will penalise them. Now try this in Singapore.

May their souls R.I.P :saint:

boycott. come up with a campaign and bury the company to the ground. Consumer power is the strongest. If you want to wait for the authorities to do it, it is not going to help.
As long as there is a demand, people willing to pay for the kinds of services they provide, they will still exist.

We had one problematic bus company before (NAE*LA). Where are they today? The reputation was so bad, that no one wanted to board their buses.

The bus company's management also has to be blamed and punished hard as a warning to other similar companies.

True Affan but most commuters like you and me wouldnt know the reputation of some of these 'reputable' companies until something like this happens....which is too late. . too late in the sense that we have to let 20 die before something is done - even then, we wont know if enough will be done, or just seen to be done.
It was reported that the fatal bus had 19 outstanding summons and some dating back to 1991 - 16 YEARS!. To renew your CVL one need Puspakom inspection every 6 months...one needs to renew your business licence every 2 years and so forth...dont tell me nobody knew of all these problems with this company until now. That's why we need to 'check and balance' and this is left with those authorities (note: operative word: authority) who are incidently employed by 'us' the Rakyat as they are called 'civil servants' That's where yours and my tax paid money is spent. These are the people we have entrusted to ensure our safety, to protect us from unscrupulous operators, etc...but seems that they are in cohorts with the illegals...
