Hi All.How do you really differentiate between a 2.5s and 2.5si (with the higher bhp) engines?Would a 2007 Japan Specs Z4 most likely have a 2.5s engine? Thanks in advance.

Non-valvetronic M5x series engine is the older version with less hp.
Valvetronic N5x series engine is later version with higher hp....

The engines are distinctly different visually, one look can tell... ;)

Thanks for the reply. That's my problem, I look and I cannot tell!!

Fabian, form the pics in the links you sent, my engine looks like the N52.

I was informed it was the M54, BUT producing 216 bhp (that's what the salesman said).

Confused.

That's N52

Hahaha, thanks aidilj. Salesman said M54. Now I got the N52.

Now I wonder which bhp version do I have now - I wonder if I can tell from the redline at 5800/6400/6500 ..

U actually trusted everything the salesman said??? ;)

Luckily it wasn't the other way round, tell you N52 but got M54... :D

LOL. To be honest, I don't think the salesman knew too much about the engines - they probably rattle off what was written in the AP documents.

I have to go back and read the original car registration, I would have sworn it was a M54 ...

I believe your engine is an N52 from the pic. It is the same as mine except, my rocker cover is silver. The rocker cover for an M54 is different in design.

From 2006-2008, BMW E85 were delivered with the N52B25 2.5lit engines in two states of tune:

2.5i : Power 175bhp, Torque 218N.m, 0-60 7.0 secs
2.5si: Power 218bhp, Torque 230N.m, 0-60 6.5 secs

The N52 engine replaced the M54 to improve handling with a lighter engine upfront.

Externally the both the N52B25 engines are identical. The only way you can tell for sure is to use the VIN and check the engine at the point of delivery.

Appreciate your reply! Looking at the redline, mine (redline at 6500) is the 218bhp version. That's what I think anyway ... !
