Hi sifuss.. :) a m newbie here.. already introduced myself in newbie thread.. i just bought my e46 318i 2.0cc year 01/06 and send my car to BMW specialist at jenjarom. Based on his inspection, he said my gearbox are problem, the ATF fluid are very dirty, last owner never changed ATF, he said he need to open my gearbox valve body (what is that??) and clean them and remove all the metal pcs trapped in the valve body. he estimated the cost is about RM4000++ plus (including labour & other services such as change engine oil, rear axle oil, ATF, computer resetting, and he also mentioned that labour cost only is already rm800~900..). Is this normal to be charged like this for this kind of service ? I think this wshop is very expensive and im still not sure with the job quality.Anybody here have done gearbox valve body cleaning ? and how much is the cost ? where ?Please advise me.Thanks..

4k is less than 6k for overhauling the gearbox..

get a second opinion...

Better get a 2nd or even a 3rd opinion bro ... Check out the workshop thread and the maintenance thread for more info

i have checked the maintenance thread but couldnt find any info about overhauling gearbox..

Hi pussy.. what do you mean 6K ?? gear box price or overhaul gearbox cost ?

from what this mechanic explain, he need to open gear box valve body , clean and dip it inside ATF fluid before install back. he also said i cant find any other place with the cost that he offered (not sure wheter true or not??)

what is the component inside the gearbox that we need to replace when do overhauling? anybody know ? is it really expensive ?

yumie, what is the mileage clock on your car.

cleaning of the gearbox valve body is not overhaul. If I am not mistaken, it is just cleaning the solenoid valves.
Overhaul means that you have to remove the G/Box to change the clutch plates, oil seal, ATF filters, ATF oil.

How does your mechanic know the ATF is dirty unless he drained it. There is no dipstick for G/Box to check ATF condition.

To clean the solenoid, you need only to do the following:-
1. Drain and replace ATF.
2. Remove g/box cover to remove ATF filters & to access the valve body.
3. Clean or replace the solenoid.
4. Change oil seal.
5. Reassemble
6. Refill ATF.

All the above does not required G/Box to be removed.

Yes bro jarance.. you r right.. he only want yo clean the valve body as per you described in step1~6 above. He already drained my ATF, my engine oil and rear axle oil. I have left my car with him since last wednesday. he said he already put chemical to clean the engine oil tank and gearbox oil tank (after drained engine oil and gear oil).

Wednesday night - park at his workshop and do nothing.
Thursday noon - Drain engine oil, gearbox oil and rear axle oil and let them drip until finish by 1 day
Friday - after drained put chemical to clean engine oil tank and gearbox tank.
Saturday (Today) - do nothing - i m not sure what he wants to do next..
Car only can be picked earliest by Monday afternoon. hmmm......

have you ever clean your valve body ? and how much was the cost ? anyone of you know this workshop - located at Jenjarom (Klang - Banting road). In front of his workshop got few bmw, merc and audi..

Yumie, Jarance is right. Servicing the valve body is a minor job. The entire Gear Box need not be removed.

The cost will definately not escalate to 4K. There are so many sifu's here, get their expert advice. I think you should go to a different wokshop already rather than wasting your time and money there. i have seen the workshop few times when i passed by on my way to KLIA. No comments as i have no experience wif them.

I would recommend you go elsewhere.

You've got PM.

Cheers

ok bro 328.. i accept yr advise.. but how to do ha.. he already did his job by half way. Should i tell him to stop to do servicing valve body? He already drained my ATF and open the tank cover. I saw the ATF filter but I didnt see the valve body yet.. according to him he will take down the valve body by tomorrow and clean it inside the ATF fluid and must install back immediately. according to him this job requires very high skill and other wshop normally cant do this.. he said other wshop will charge me 6-7k for this job.. he said he really want to help me and not to take advantage of me.. hmm..:( ..

what if I didnt do this valve body servicing ? is it any damage to my gearbox? he said I must do this , otherwise my gearbox will be damaged.

Bro jarance, bro 328, other sifus..

actually if do valve body servicing as per below :
1. Drain and replace ATF.
2. Remove g/box cover to remove ATF filters & to access the valve body.
3. Clean or replace the solenoid.
4. Change oil seal.
5. Reassemble
6. Refill ATF.

How much is the cost ? 1K , 2K or 3K or below 1K ?

for that work ? dun even need to remove gearbox, remove valve body, soak in petrol for 1 hour, then remove all solenoids, check and move all springs and ball valves, put back all, filter new, then put new atf fluid.. that's all..

all that below 1k at BMWorld when i idid mine..

now, what BS is the mechanic is talking, first time i heard soak in the gearbox oil tank...

the gearbox does not have a oil tank.. some more soak in ATF to clear.. haha.. all this while the gearbox is filled with ATF oil..

i think, kena con kaw-kaw.. expert ? every mechanic can do it.. Ah Wai can remove my whole gearbox and re-install within 4 hours, inclusive opening up my clutches..and that is with his boys.. not him..

what to do... pay him and dun see him anymore.. if you tarik your car out, sure will have problem..

cheers..

yes bro pussy, u r right.. i cant tarik my car now, what i can do is after his finish his job, request him to make full detail list of what the things that he has done with the detail price and then try to get best bargain..

Yumie,

U should get your car out. If he still insist tht u pay that kinda sum for just valve body service...u better report polis and complaint to Hal Ehwal Pengguna bro.

The job u claim , even kat workshop potong leher also 1.5k and below la bro.

Pussy is right, most genuine wshop charge below 1K la bro...

Hope u get ur issue resolved.

Cheers

Yumie,
Better you make clear with the mechanic, What the hells of job they doing with rm4k?
Let say the workmanship is Rm1k..So What for another 3k?

Kurang Ajar punya workshop.......what they think who ever drive BM's car got note printing machine at home aaaa.....I don't like to con's people and so I don't like people to con's me....

Yumie,

Pussy is right.

I had my valve body cleaned as well. Basically once the oil sump is removed, and the valve body can be detached by removing some screws.

As for the valve body, it is made of two pieces of iron or aluminium block. Once the two pieces is opened up you could see the hydraulic flow lines with the springs. It actually controls the gear shift via hydraulic pressure. TO clean it, just soak it in petrol or diesel, then manually brush it. Then use compressor blower to blow off the dirt and leave it to dry.

I paid RM 300 if I remember correctly for mine. All less than a few hours job.

Cheers

Albundy, I dont think RM300 include the cost of the ATF.. ATF alone cost about this figure.

definitely before I pay I will slow talk and negotiate with him first.. now I cant do anything.. he already halfway on his job.. If I tarik my car also not so nice and could be dangerous to me..

after his finished his job, i need you guys to help me during price negotiation (who know the price very well and good in technical).. anybody please volunteer.. please give me your phone no.. i will call you during price negotiation and want you to help me for this price negotiation... please..
