went back to check brake pads due to screeching sound ... changed FOC new sets and the sound still there. Finally gave in to mechanic saying that brake discs are due for change. 4 orignal BMW brake discs x RM300 each. No more screeching sound, just the sound of me moaning at the cost. :(

hehehe, yeap, AB charges RM500+ for 1st service with them for a E46 318i....oil service it is called....replace engine oil, filter & the microfilter for the air-con.

My car is due for next service i.e. Inspection 1 at AB....heard it will cost RM800+. Will post details here later.

At AB, although it is expensive, it is better to service with them during the warranty period (even for another year after the warranty expiry) .... to claim for any defects. From what i read in the forum, AB guys are also much better with electronic problems than "outside" mechanics .... maybe better equipments to diagnose.

If you service outside off AB, those mechanics can still reset your OBC's next oil service readings. My experience with one "outside" mechanic is that though he is helpful & nice, but business is business. For e.g. he said for my next service, must change the radiator overflow tank because very prone to leakage. Whilst for AB, they wont change till it is broken (which you may run the risk of damaging other parts of radiator as well). Being business owners, these outside mechanics will scrutinise your car & be prepared for them to say this & that may need changing but it is really up to you whether you want to or not (but after they say such things & if you dont change that part, you may be left wondering whether you should have). If you change that part, at least you know your car is tip top condition at the expense of $$. AB's fellas probably go through their checklist only. So, there are pros and cons.

At AB, they quoted me RM900 to to knock back small dent at rear bumper & re-spray entire bumper ...whilst i did the same outside for RM280. These things you dont go to AB la.

BTW, i serviced outside once because i just purchased the 2-yr old car then & wanted it to be tip top before taking my family for holiday trip & AB didnt have a slot for me because they were too busy before Hari Raya last yr.

Why not you do like some of us .... go to AB for the scheduled services & in between the 25k mileage, say at 12.5k kms done, go to outside mechanics for an oil change only. After the 3years, I will still opt to go to AB for scheduled services but wear & tear items, i will just do it outside e.g. tyres of course, brake discs & pads. I had quite an episode with brake discs/pads & my advice is stick with original BMW brake discs & also pads!

what would be the cost to change oil, oli filter, reset ecu + labour? how often should this be done?

was advised to change this MORE frequently as opposed to the recommended 25k (is it?) km..

p/s: btw, is mobil 1 the best engine oil?

stephen thks for the info, was wandering, y u need a oil change at the interval of 12,500km when i tot the next change wll be at 25k km..
this aroused my doubts too, as wat kinda of engine oil they are using which can stand up to 25000 mileage? for this, i rather not wait till the 25k mark, i'll do it at 17500... jt cant bear the cost to repair the engine in later days...

if for normal touchng up, i'll be like u too, will go to normal mechanics..
    :)

    cheers

heard that the engine oil that AB uses is just normal Shell Helix Ultra fully-synthetic ... not the longlife version. Anyway, even it is "longlife" version, in my opinion, dont wait for 25k kms to do an oil change. Our weather here is not very kind to our beloved UDM engines. When i got my car, the previous owner had just done 16k kms (over a period of 1year 1mth) since the first oil service @ 23k. When i checked the dipstick, there is some sludge. BTW, AB recommends 25k kms or 1year whichever comes first.

At one shop, they charge RM160 for Shell Helix Ultra fully-syn engine oil change, including the oil filter and labour costs. This applies to 318i model only and as for the 6 cyclinders, the cost is RM300. Tell them not to reset the OBC's mileage countdown.

Well i dont mind spending the RM160 to change after clocking 12,500kms since a service at AB. Then when the next 12,500kms is up, it is time to visit AB again.

As long as the oil is fully-syn, whether it is Shell Helix Ultra or Mobil 1, it is fine by me. That RM160 was a promo with Shell Helix only. But hey, look at your engine oil cover.... BMW recommends Castrol.

oic, then i'll do it outside for my normal oil service, heard of the shop in kayu ara (after the mobil gas station), fren told me he's not bad n the price v reasonable..

means after the next 12.5km, i'll have to go b to AB for slaughtering n pay them another rm500 (200 for oil change, another 300 they masuk pocket).. :( ..

i noticed bout the oil cap too, they recommended castrol, but gives us shell instead... wat the heck man! maybe margin of profits for castrol is v low compared to shell n mobil.. jt guessing.. hehehehe...

AB is monopolising the market.. we need competitors for this stuff.. heard there will be new dealership comin into town by mid of the yr.. price war is v much appreciated.. :yahoo:

    Mileage 48,589km

BMW Inspection I including car body inspection, labour cost = RM143
Shell Helix Ultra engine oil = RM223
    Oil filter = RM43
    Steering fluid 0.25L = RM4.50
    Microfilter = RM144.40
    Windshield washer = RM9.77
    Service Tax = RM7.15

    Total = RM574.82

p/s: bill showed RM364 for Shell Helix Ultra AB 6.5L (BMW Longlife-01) ... i said since when 318i 2.0 use 6.5L of engine oil .... mistake, so charges are RM223 instead, difference of RM141.

Thank god u checked... it is bad enuff to be charging so high but then to use such under-handed techniques (overstate oil used) to get additional revenue... inexcusable. By the way, are you sure they did not put in 6.5L of oil in your car????

hehehe, u sure made me panic & went rite away from this laptop to check my car. Ran the engine to operating temperature & checked the dipstick. Ok, correct level. But the oil's colour is light brown. I forgot to check what colour it was b4 servicing. Well, i just change the engine oil at 41k kms at M-Speed after getting my car at 39k kms. Now at 48,600kms the oil wouldnt have de-graded so much isnt it?

That oil change at 41k kms was much needed as it was black & full of sludge. 1st oil change per record was at 23k kms. So, imagine 16k kms & 1yr 2mths later @ 39k kms, the oil looked terribly dirty.

And the sludge must still be around a little bit coz' the oil on the dipstick i checked just now had a a mix of shades of darker brown & light brown.

Should i do an engine oil flush at next oil change? Wonder why AB didnt do that ... as it is changing oil at 25k kms or 1 year is ridiculously long.

btw, i believe the oil charges was a genuine mistake. The service advisor was apologising many times to me.

anyway, oil change at M-speed was so much cheaper i.e. Shell Helix Ultra + bmw oil filter + labour only RM160 for this 2lt engine .... whilst at AB, RM43 for filter & RM223 for the so-called Shell Helix Ultra (BMW Longlife-01) & labour cost included elsewhere in the Inspection I labour cost!

what to do, trying to maintain with them since car less than 3yrs old ... in case any future "goodwill" warranty claims. Touch wood.

Just owned 2002 Facelifted E46 :D . The KM clocked 148,000 KM. The second day of driving I have changed:

    1. Coolant 4 liter = RM52
    2. Top up engine oil = RM13
    3. Change control arm bush 2 x RM380 = RM760
    4. Labour for bush = RM150
    5. Tyre balancing and allignment = RM40

Found out 2 of the rims bengkok already.
Found out after 3 days have to top up 0.5 liter coolant

All the above was done at Malacca.

I am looking for good mechanics to do full checking .... :getyourfactsright:

    Thanks Kahar!

I have send a message to Malacca folks.

Sending the car to AB is second option. That is why I am trying to esbtablish non-AB mechanics to take care of the car.....

    * hardly affordable to own it .......maintainance have to be budgetted.....
