It was said to me that there are several engines that go well with BMW E46(doesn't matter what cc it is actually)I was told that the best engine for E46 would be M43 as it is reliable and easier in terms of the foreman to get their hands dirty :39: . But when I do a little research on google, I find that N42 is better in terms of us drivers and not mechanics? :stupid: I personally feel that it wouldn't really matter which engine is best for mechanics or drivers but best engine for the car right? Can't be talking about putting in a V12 engine in a E46. Right Right??? Definitely there would be a reason for why BMW changed the engine from M43 to N42. And I can bet the sifu's here will say that with proper medical check up for the car will ensure the life of the engine????:top::top::top::top:Anyone would like to voice out their opinion and why?

If possible look for E90 that comes with N45 engine as its the most powerful 4 pots petrol, produces 174 bhp instead of 150 bhp. It replaced the fuel economy modern valtronic with the old tech of vanos

Go with M54. Pretty much bullet-proof. You get power & decent fuel consumption.

Oh okay m43b19 will normally be in what year of manufacturing for e46 bro? And there if one of it is 6 Potter then the lower spec is 4 potter??

But roadtax and fuel consumption have to look at it first brother. My first beemer, still thinking about 1.8 or 2.5. Sigh

Depending on how you drive, in one of the E46 weekly TTs last light, a fellow 330 driver claimed his M54B30 is giving a much better FC than his old Waja.

    hehe... clarification...

Actually, I mentioned it was about the same, for the distance I'm currently driving for work i.e. 48km (to and from), jam etc.
So for what it does and not much more in consumption, I'd take the M54B30.

A well maintained N42/46 will give you the best FC, roadtax and higher resell value when fuel price rocket upwards in the near future.

M43 is a little too old and its SOHC, only produces 103bhp and 165 nm instead of 150bhp and 200nm from N42/46. Therefore if you demand a sporty performance from your BMW M43 is not the engine for you. You will fell its like Proton Persona 1.3

disclaimer : If you love to rempit and enjoy the UDM full potential M54B30 is the best engine, however if roadtax is your concern then M54B25 is the solution but FC is higher vs M54B30. N42/46 will have similar FC as per M54B25 if you tekan a lot :)

OMG stupid Wikipedia... after coming here only I realized there many types of engine. M54 now ? M54 is in which year of the car? But I am quite shocked to hear that 3.0 gives good fuel consumption. But for daily road usage?? Is it okay? And always in jam?

If u just need a daily drive, look for one with good service record. Wingzee's 3251 is a very good example.

Oh well I am the personal who don't always press the accelerator would much. Cause I personally feel that when you drive at a average speed in town area or traffic, people can see the car much longer and rasa sakit hati longer compared to zooming pass in a quick second. But wow waja can't give a better fc. Stupid proton....
