unique(?) interior smell

Hi guys,I've had my e39 '97 for 3 mths now. never ceases to amaze me...this UDM. One thing in particular is the interior smell. For a car this age, i find it remarkable that the distinctive Beemer smell is still there... I would have thought it would be long gone by now. It started me thinking, how is this so? and what exactly gives this smell? At first I tot it came from the leather upholstery, but now I don't think so. I think it may be coming from the Climate Control filter element which may have been treated to give this smell. Any one here have the correct explanation? TQ

dont know but i think the smell must have been "designed" ..the smell is distinct to BMWs and also notice that the mercs have a distinct smell as well

I have to agree with you both... This smell is special and only found mostly on 5 & 7 series.

Now you will know if your gal have flirt with other guy if she comes back with that smell on her hair or cloth.. hahahaha.

I have driven a 525i previously (company car) and just love the smell... now looking for my own BMW but so far have not come across any 3 series with that smell not even the new E60/90

Back to the topic though, I really love this special scent that comes free with the car... any dos (and don'ts) so that it remains around for as long as possible? (I save on the car perfumes u see.)

I have had my E34 for almost 10 years. Have never ever used any car perfumes and the familiar BMW smell you mentioned is still there. Bad BO unfortunately, overrides everything.

I disagree with the smell. I think its just the smell of the leather from a said supplier. IE: All the 5 + 7 series' leather seats' leather are from supplier A.

The smell of the 5 series in Australia smells different from the 5 series down here wor..

The grass is always greener on the other side ? But in this case, the air is always cleaner on the other side....

Hence, your car seats smell worse because of the humidity transferred from the body to your car in Malaysia. Whereas in countries where the climate is more moderate or cold, your dont sweat as much.

So i suggest hubby + wifey move up to camerons where the air is sufficiently less polluted and the sweat doesnt dribble from you everytime you get out of the car :top:

the other day my mom put "daun pandan" under the seat, the car smells sweet potpury that makes u feel like throwing up. took a while b4 the smell went away and restored back with the original.

sure its not the seat giving out that smell? those of u who'd change, did the smell remained?

p/s anybody got e34 elec seats let me know. been looking everywhere.

I have the answer to all your questions......
The smell comes from the leather seat (so take good care of them). my year 99 E39 previously owned by Aussie with air freshener in the car. No special smell cept the Ambi Purr....(yuck-more like "ambil pih"). After ridding the ambi pur i got an original Auto Bavaria leather seat upholstery cream with UV protection at RM128 per bottle. Give it a general dose and WALLA! You will get the smell of luxury in your car........TRY IT mana yang tarak boleh jalan means your leather seat tipu punya sudah tukar kot.....

For me, everytime i open the car door....fuh....the smell....the smell i tell you....no nid to wear any other perfumelah.......wear BMW perfume, even my friends and customers can tell that I drive a BMW without actually knowing what car I own....now thats something you dont get from other cars.......works with girls too.......cubalah.....no regrets.....
