I'm thinking of selling my 1993 E34 and switch to Audi A4. I'm looking at pre-2000 versions as they look very affordable. read somewhere that Audi's are expensive to maintain. Any previous owners of Audi here can share with me their experience with Audi and maybe compare with BM?

Pre 2000 Audi??? you mean the B5 A4 1.8 NA? Better to get the B5.5 A4 1.8T.. Better gearbox.... Audi parts are more expensive due to its smaller volume unless you can source from sinchapoh...

Go test drive and see if u like it compared to the E34... both cars has different feel to it.. The A4 may not be as stable as your E34... The A4 is very front heavy as the engine sits in front of the subframe and not over the subframe like the BMW..

btw, read your post in Vagmy...

If Merc is too classy and BMW too sporty for u, then Audi is just right.. :D

Audi shape is too ordinary with no distinctive proprietary design like the kidney grill of BMW and the big squarish grill of Merc. The dashboard design lagi teruk, u can't tell the difference between Audi and JDM.

Audi have wonderful multi layers door gap insulation and rigid body design. Weight distribution is awful for the car until they had to come up with a 4WD to cure its awful driving dynamics.

1.8T hard to come by...and costs more
Interesting comment about the engine...didn't know that, thanks

The Audi A4 from B5 - B7 has its engine and gearbox mounted longitudanally similar to BMWs or any RWD cars BUT instead of driving the rear wheels, Audi drives the front wheels.. so this forced the engine to be mounted more to the front. The new A5 has a newer design which allows the engine to sit further back, or so i read..

The gearbox in the A4 B5 1.8 NA isn't as durable as the 1.8T. which explains why the price difference..

Go research around for prices of wear and tear items. then make your own decision on the purchase... 1 thing I know is expensive is the replacement for the front multilink suspension parts. Happy hunting.

Audi... Cool car.

Spare part ... not so cool...Had a friend who has an A4 ... it broke down.. head gasket and radiator issue. We checked the price with him for radiators.... new rm2k while 2nd hand rm800. Compared to E36 or 46, radiators cost less than rm800. Other parts, you guys can guess la...his total repair cost... I am too scared to ask.

But then again, the Audi driving satisfaction.. priceless I guess.

I do not know about the A4 B5 or B6 but B7 really got the quality all round. I have tested B7 at 230kn/h and its feel like driving 140km/h on jap car

Yes B7 is nice... with good interior build quality.... BTW, B8 is coming out soon but it seem to look the same as the B7, exterior wise...

Crusher, no need to sell the E34... Just buy another car... ;) Get the Audi but keep the E34 as project car... ;)

Like I have said, go asked around from Audi parts shop to check the prices on the regular wear and tear parts, then u decide.... Don't decide solely from hearsay. It's the same thing with what ppl say about BMW... Outsiders always say this car expensive, that car expensive... U have to go check by yourself to really know what's the real picture...

The new B8.... :D

Looks like they finally decided on a distinctive signature grill.. :D

crusher,

join the audi owners for tea and ask them. there a quite a few B5 or 5.5 owners in the clubaudimalaysia. they are a friendly bunch. serious.

I agree with Ah Lian,

Even in this forum/club we have a few members who own Audi previously..
