Just curious. How many keys do you get with your BMW? Asking this cause the dealer I bought my E39 is having problems getting the "other" keys from the original owner. I understand there are 4 keys. Are they all the same? Please advise.

    E39: 4 keys:

1&2 - Normal key with memory

3 - Service or Valet key - Can start and open door but cannot open boot or alarm. No memory. Grey in color.

4 - Black plastic emergency key. Can open door. Never tried to drive with it. Keep in my wallet. Told this can be used to retrieve the key profile to reproduce the other keys.

    Carefull, very expensive to replace.

    E36 got 4 keys.

    1) The master key
    2) Err spare key
    3) Plastic key (to keep in da wallet)
    4) Another spare key - limited usage (can't open glovebox and car boot)

Should be safer with 4 keys.

I wouldnt worry about the Key 3 (Valet) and Key 4 (Emergency) - Their use is limited.

I am still chasing the dealer to give me the other keys. He claims the onwer lost it.

Anyone have any idea how much it cost to make a new key?

:D If the previous onwer still got the spare keys, better to do a new lock than a spare key.

Me too, I only have one key to the car.. the owner did not give me the rest.

I just had mine made at AB Glenmarie, it cost RM784.xx . It takes abt 2 weeks for ordering. According to the ppl there, they will change the codes after receiving the new key. So both keys will have new codes to the car (for security reason).

Hope this helps, PM me if you need to know more.

    Alex you got PM.

So they change the codes for the one key that you had too? How do they do that? On the spot?

Well, I have 2 keys but the keyless entry for 1 functioning well & the other one can't. Suspected one kaput. Has anyone experience that?

The key looks ok & the red light is on when you press. But it just can't open the door.

Saw your key and it seem that the alarm or lock for the car is activated by infrared.

Suggested that you try to press the key near an infrared detector. You can use the 2link (the one for the remote astro receiver and transmitter)
When you press the key and point at the 2link receiver, you should see a colour LED blinking on the receiver.

BTW, infrared is cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Suggested that you clean the receiver on the car. If I am not mistaken, it should be located near your rear view mirror.
